I am currently a graduate student at the University of Maryland. Before entering graduate school, I spent two years teaching 1st grade at a successful Connecticut charter school, and I am certified in elementary general education. I believe that learning, particularly for elementary students, should be exciting and fun, so I am committed to bringing enthusiasm and creativity to my approach as a tutor. I am able to collect and use student data to diagnose misunderstandings and develop targeted learning plans in order to help students improve and reach their individual learning goals.

I have expertise in teaching/tutoring all elementary subjects, with an emphasis on reading and math. I also have experience working with students with special needs, including ADD/ADHD, autism, and emotional disorders. All of my students in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 finished the year at or above grade level in reading and math.

I graduated from Kenyon College with high honors in psychology and a double-major in classics. I have tutored college-level psychology and have experience with successful SAT, Praxis, and GRE test preparation. I am also well-acquainted with the material for AP English, Biology, and U.S. History courses.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a Teach for America corps member, and was certified by the state of Connecticut as an Elementary K-6 teacher in 2010. I have been teaching 1st grade for two years in New Haven at a successful charter school. I have taken graduate level education courses at Southern Connecticut State University.

Phonics

As a first grade teacher, I have been teaching beginning phonics to students for the past two years. I received a high score on the Foundations of Reading examination required for teaching certification in Connecticut. I have a strong understanding of the concepts and teaching methods necessary to help students develop phonics skills.

Social Studies

For the past two years, I have been responsible for writing and planning the Social Studies curriculum for my grade level. I have written units on geography, American heroes and symbols, and countries of the world. Each unit is aligned with the Connecticut Social Studies standards.

Special Needs

I have experience working with children and young adults with autism, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, Asperger’s syndrome, and behavioral disorders in an overnight camp setting. I have planned educational activities for children with special needs ranging from 6-18 years old. I am trained in appropriate methods of behavior management for children with special needs. I have several students in my current classroom with IEPs which means I differentiate my lessons for students with special needs on a daily basis.
