I am an experienced classroom teacher and tutor. I have successfully helped students build vocabulary, use phonics skills, learn to read and understand what they read, and gain enough confidence to become an independent reader. I enjoy working with English language learners of all ages. Most of my experience and learning materials are designed for K-3rd Grade.
I have successfully taught math using Saxon, Montessori, and traditional approaches so will be familiar with your child's school curriculum. I favor using hands-on materials to build interest and understanding, but believe focused practice is necessary for many children to master basic math facts.

I am patient with children, but persistent in practicing skills that lead to understanding and academic achievement.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold state of Maryland certification for Early Childhood and Elementary education and have 13 years of experience teaching first and second grade. In addition, I have many years of experience working with preschool children in Montessori classrooms. I am certified by the American Montessori Society. I also tutor children and adults who are learning English. I have great success by getting to know each child's interests, strengths, and manner of learning. I then adapt lessons using lots of hands-on games, activities, and stories to entice the child to want to learn and practice more!

Elementary Math

I have successfully taught and tutored preschool--3rd grade students in math for over 20 years. I am familiar with Saxon math materials, Everyday math, Montessori math materials as well as traditional math texts and products. I have many hands-on activities for teaching and reviewing math facts, story problems, telling time, computing money, probability, volume and measurement, estimating and graphing.

English

I have a BA degree in English as well as a Master's in Early Childhood and Elementary Teaching. I am also a volunteer ESOL teacher for adults in my community.

After many years of teaching in both traditional and Montessori classrooms, I am aware of the challenges some children face in sentence composition, vocabulary, and speech. English language learners who are self-conscious can make rapid progress with individual instruction. I get to know each of my students and choose materials and activities to meet the child's needs and interests.

Phonics

I am an experienced classroom teacher and tutor. I have successfully helped students build vocabulary, use phonics skills, learn to read and understand what they read, and gain enough confidence to become an independent reader. I enjoy working with English language learners of all ages. Most of my experience and learning materials are designed for K-3rd Grade.

Praxis

I have a Master's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education as well as State of Maryland certification. I have taught and tutored for over 20 years. In 2010 I completed the battery of Praxis tests, earning a superior rating on the Elementary level. The tests require careful reading, and quick focused writing. I would be pleased to help teachers complete this process with confidence!

Reading

I am a certified and experienced elementary and preschool teacher. I help children build skills by reinforcing phonics understanding, teaching spelling patterns and sight words, and by choosing stories of interest. Children who are struggling in reading may be skipping over unfamiliar words, losing understanding of the text. I have many hands-on games and materials to provide practice in enjoyable ways.

My son enjoys learning again! — This previous school year my 9 year old son has gotten bored with school and learning, he didn't find the "fun" in it. Working with Ms. Anne has him reading on his own (without being told), completing work independently, and enjoying it all while he's doing it. He is excited to work with Ms. Anne and enjoys the time they spend tutoring. She is patient, understanding and she also praises him for ...
