As an engineering manager, I spend much of my day explaining technical subjects to non-technical managers as well as to my employees. I enjoy this part of my job so much that for the past eight years I have tutored middle school, high school and college students one-on-one in all levels of math and science. I have successfully tutored students in pre-algebra, algebra, intermediate and advanced algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, physics and SAT preparation.
I believe in working one-on-one with students to help them understand what they are learning in school. I believe that homework is necessary to reinforce and solidify what they are learning so I often give extra homework. Often students just need someone to reinforce what they are learning or to explain it in a different way. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses and each must be taught as an individual. My experience in tutoring math, starting with my own three children, is extensive, so that I have always found a way to explain difficult concepts to help a student understand it.
In high school math especially, too many students fall behind in skills that they need to build on. Then they develop the attitude that "I just can't do math." I believe that everyone can "do math" if they're firmly grounded in the basic principles and continue to practice through homework. I have uncovered weakness in earlier subjects while tutoring more advanced math. By finding and correcting these problems, the student improves, gains confidence and can often complete the subject with limited or no additional help.
I look forward to talking with you and helping your student improve his/her math and science skills.
