I scored an 800 on the math portion of the SAT as a high school freshman, and also scored 36/36 on the math portion of the ACT. My GRE scores were 790 on the math portion and 750 on the verbal portion. I enjoy standardized tests, I know how they work and I can teach you all my tricks!

For standardized tests (SAT, ACT, etc.), I recommend buying a prep book and taking practice tests. That helps to diagnose weak areas. Going over sample problems with a student often helps to find out where there might be obstacles. While going through sample problems, we may find that we need to pause to focus on a particular skill.

Throughout middle and high school, I was on Math Team. My school's team competed in national tournaments, and I was the nation's #1 high school senior in math in 1987 (Mu Alpha Theta).

While working with a student, I like to make up problems on the fly that test the specific skill we are working on. A white board works well for this so that I can see the student's work and correct where necessary.

While earning my Master's in Entomology at the University of Maryland, I worked as a TA (teaching assistant) for freshman biology. I taught lab sections, prepared students for exams, graded exams, graded lab reports, and tutored those who needed extra help.

I like to use real-life examples to help others learn, and I like to actively involve students in the learning process. Learning doesn't have to be a passive experience. The more one interacts with the material, the more likely one is to learn and retain it. I prefer to tailor lessons to an individual student's needs and interests. I am open to frequent email correspondence to ensure that key concepts are reinforced.

I have composed and edited formal correspondence for politicians and small and large organizations. I enjoy editing writing to ensure it is smooth, vibrant, and concise.

I love to help others learn and discover, and there's no greater satisfaction than seeing a student learn and succeed. I look forward to helping ensure your academic and professional success.

ACT Math

I scored 36/36 on the math portion of the ACT, and scored 800 on the math portion of the SAT. I understand how standardized tests work, and can teach you all my secrets. I did math team all through middle and high school, and was the national math champion (Mu Alpha Theta) for high school seniors in 1987.

Algebra 1

I love math and I love to help students see the beauty of numbers. Math is also an important building block for future subjects, so I encourage students to understand formulas rather than simply memorizing them. This also leads to better retention.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 involves difficult concepts, so it is important not to rush and simply memorize formulas. I encourage students to think through a math problem before trying to solve it. This leads to better retention and greater understanding.

Elementary Math

I love teaching math to children of all ages. Math is an important building block for future subjects. I like using specific, real-life examples to help young children understand math.

Geometry

I love math and I love explaining math problems to students. Geometry involves some memorization, but it's important for students to understand the logic behind the formulas. I encourage students to understand the formulas because it leads to better retention.

Praxis

I've had success tutoring the following standardized tests: SAT (all sections), SAT II math, ACT (all sections), GED, and the GRE. My Praxis PPST scores were as follows:
-Reading: 185/190
-Writing: 182/190
-Math: 189/190

I would be happy to send my score report and answer any further questions.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra includes some core concepts that are important in later math topics, so it's very important to master these key concepts. I'm one of those nerdy people who loves to talk and think about numbers. I sincerely enjoy sharing an understanding of math with others.

SAT Math

As a high school freshman, I scored 800 on the math portion of the SAT. I've "cracked the code" for standardized tests, and can teach my secrets to students. I did math team all through middle and high school, and was the national math champion (Mu Alpha Theta) for high school seniors in 1987.

Writing

I know how to make your writing clear and concise. The first step is for you to understand what you want to say and why. The right questions from an instructor can help you find the right words.
