“To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” Douglas Adams

When pressed to categorize myself as either instructor or facilitator, I lean toward the latter. I facilitate learning - learning of the new or giving new insights into previously acquired knowledge. It is my role to encourage and to stimulate as well as to provide new information. I want to encourage critical thinking and behavioral change. To be most effective, information must be integrated into routine thought and behavior patterns. I believe that the most important element in learning is active participation by the learner - egocentric involvement in the process. Students will learn more if they feel that they are an important and active part of the process. Each student brings unique talents and experiences to the learning environment. It is my quest to help them enhance their unique qualities.

My teaching experience has been predominantly in the inner city of Miami, Florida and in rural and urban areas of Georgia. I have taught physical science, biology-regular and honors, earth science and chemistry. At the college level, I have taught Allied Health and Nursing students in disciplines such as microbiology, anatomy and physiology (lab and lecture), as well as biotechnology. I have also designed, wrote and implemented a biotechnology associates of science (AS) program for Darton College, in Albany, GA.

I am an inclusion-minded science facilitator who has welcomed all students into a warm learning environment. I have extensive experience with at risk, EBD, autistic and other special needs students. Additionally, I have served in the capacities of Curriculum Instructional Coordinator for all subjects in high school (Florida); as Academic Coach for all subjects in middle school (Georgia) settings; and as Secondary Science Specialists in Utah, where I was a science coach in 21 schools. One of my areas of expertise is the analyses of data to find trends that can pinpoint student strengths and weaknesses. Once the data is analyzed, I use the information to drive student centered learning.

Prior to your initial training session, I will administer a learning style survey and review your current performance in the subject area of interest. With extensive training in cross curricular pedagogical approaches, as well as data driven decision making, I will differentiate your tutoring experience based on individual learning styles. I will use literacy strategies based on the Common Core; and associated Common Core math strategies to enhance the Next Generation of Science Standards to ensure mastery of your subject area.

With experience in three states, where I informed curriculum and sat on standardized test committees, I am confident that I can assist you with enhancing mastery in your subject area of interest. Above all, my PhD research on using emotions to predict science outcomes, ensures that I have the expertise to reduce science anxiety during your tutoring experiences with me. I believe, as Hinton ET AL (2008) stated that "emotions are fundamental to learning".

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have worked with Aspergers students from 6th through college in public Schools and colleges for 18 years. Additionally, I have a "Special Needs" endorsement on my Georgia Teacher Certificate. Moreover, I have studied the brain structure and function as well as how cognitive pathways are impaired in my MS and my PhD.

Biostatistics

I have a MS in biomedical sciences which required that I do biostatistics. I have a quantitative PhD where I also had to do statistics classes. These are outlined on my transcripts.

Botany

I have a BS and MS in biology. I have taught botany in middle school and high school. I have passed the teacher certification test for biology which included botany criteria.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an Educational Consultant, I have trained teachers in K-6th as well as working with students in 6th grade. Currently, I am the Educational Consultant for a specialty school for STEM subjects for students from K - 5th grade. As the sole adult, I interact with all students in all subject areas daily, as I frame the curriculum in preparation for hiring a full time teacher who I will train to replace me.

Genetics

I have taken Genetics courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have also taught Genetics subject matter at both the high school and post secondary levels.

Nutrition

I have done extensive related work as a part of my coursework for my MS degree in Bio-medical Sciences.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken organic chemistry I and II and the undergraduate level. I have also taken the American Chemical Society test and passed with an above average score. I have also done graduate work that required organic chemistry expertise.

Praxis

In November 2011, I took the Biology 6-12 Praxis and passed with the following scores: 164 out of a possible 100-200 points.

Public Speaking

Passionate, powerful and purposeful are three adjectives that can be used to describe my speaking platform. I use my life experiences, education, and survival as a single parent of two males to empower my audience to persevere through the odds that might be stacked against them! I can speak on Empowerment; Moral Building; Navigating Life's Social Emotional Dynamics; Balancing Work , Life, and Family Responsibilities; Breaking Through Social Barriers; Educating Marginalized Populations, Endurance Running, and among others.

I am qualified, because I have lived these extremes; studied the human neurological aspects of them; researched them anecdotally and empirically; as well as being in the process of authoring several works on them.

I have done public speaking for the American Association of Blacks in higher Education (AABHE); The Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA); The Rotary Club of Nassau, The Bahamas; The Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach, Nassau, The Bahamas; and the Sandiland’s Rehabilitation Centre Child and Adolescent Mental Health Workshop, as well as appearing on numerous radio programs with Guardian Talk Radio (Nassau, The Bahamas) and Hard Copy on Peace 107.5 (Nassau, The Bahamas). Additionally, I conducted a radio program on Peace 107.5 called “Empowerment, The Radio Show”.

Sociology

I have done extensive sociology coursework and research as a part of the requirements for my PhD in Education.

Zoology

I have taken coursework in zoology at both the undergraduate and graduate. I have also taught coursework in zoology at both the secondary and post secondary levels.
