I have 24 years experience working for Montgomery County Public Schools. I have taught Sp ed at Pre-Ac, grade one and grade two levels. I have taught summer school/Book Club for the county. I have also taught Reading Literacy, with a total focus on reading and writing, and have also taught first and second grades, as well as a combination class of GT first and second graders. I have served as Team Leader for both first and second grade. I am currently a Focus Teacher at Gaithersburg Elementary. As part of my responsibility, I teach ten writing classes a week to grades K-5. I have also done math support as well as math acceleration. I am the Gifted/Talented liaison for the school, and accommodate for all standardized tests. Beginning this spring, I will be teaching a Nutrition class to grades 4 and 5.
Besides an MEQ in special education, I have a Masters in Counseling from John's Hopkins. I also hold certificates in primary ed, general ed, reading literacy, special ed, and one for Pupil Personnel Worker. I have received two international humanitarian awards for my work with children and the need to decrease medications, especially antidepressants and antipsychotics. I also serve on the Advisory Council for Empathic Listening and have presented at international conferences. Children are my life. My counseling background gives me a more in depth ability to understand students and deal with their individual issues without the need for medication.
As a teacher in MCPS for the past 24 years. I do not believe that I have ever taught a class without making accommodations for students with ADD/ADHD, which do not include medicating. Techniques can be as simple as allowing a student to stand rather than sitting when completing seat work, allowing for breaks that gets the student up and moving, or allowing them to hold a stress ball when listening or concentrating. I have also along the same vein, worked closely with parents of highly anxious children, who have many similar characteristics. My approach is much more positive than negative.
I am certified in Early Childhood, Elementary Education and general Education. I have taught special needs children as well as gifted/talented, and accelerated math. I have a personal array of appropriate materials for the elementary level. I am presently a writing teacher for grades K-5.
I work in a very diverse educational setting. Although English is my first language, I am fluent enough in Spanish to give directions in Spanish to non-English speaking students. I have also had success in teaching students of other languages as well. A lot of it involves confidence building. Lower leveled books with good visual clues also promotes learning the language more quickly.
I am well qualified with writing and am presently teaching ten writing classes at an elementary level. During my graduate program, writing remained a strength.
Having worked for years with students who are beginner readers, I come with a plethora of information and activities. I am certified in Reading Literacy and have taught Summer Book Club in the past. I am familiar with both the Lexiled and leveled approach to choosing books and have administered the MClass reading assessment as well as the MSA Reading assessment multiple times.
I am certified in Special Education as well as Elementary Counseling. I have worked with children who are developmentally delayed as well as learning disabled. Many of the students have had difficulties with speech and language issues as well as fine motor concerns. Within any given classroom, there is always a span of abilities. Lessons should always be differentiated to address the needs of individual students at all levels.
Being a teacher for more than two decades, I understand all too well the importance of excellent study habits. Students must understand the importance of good organization, the ability to stay focused with few distraction, and a willingness to be prepared. Study habits should be somewhat individualized based on the age and ability of each student. Parental support is also a must. There needs to be an open dialogue between the teacher and the study. There also needs to be, to some degree, a sense of flexibility.
Amazing tutor!! — My son had been struggling with the fundamentals of reading for most of the school year. Despite additional assistance at school and countless hours at home with us, we reached a point where we knew we needed assistance from a pro and a pro we got! Mathy has been a blessing to us and to our son. In just a handful of one hour sessions we can already see a difference in his confidence and his rea ...
