My name is Melissa and I am currently a high school English teacher with over six years of experience in a traditional classroom setting. In addition to teaching in the high school classroom, I have also taught middle school, and tutored a wide variety of students ranging from fifth grade through college level.

This past year I was awarded the Friends of Catholic Education Teacher of the Year at my high school. This award was received with great honor and I was very pleased to know that my colleagues and administrators selected me for this title.

My formal education consists of: a private-school high school diploma, a Bachelors in English from Mount St. Mary's University (2007), a Masters in Education from Mount St. Mary's University (2009), and a Certificate in Supervision and Administration from Johns Hopkins University (2013).

Over the past six years I have taught: AP Language and Composition, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Journalism, Literature, Reading, Vocabulary, Writing, College Prep, and Organizational Behaviors.

My personal hobbies including hiking, dogs, cooking, volunteering with the homeless and needy in the community, and spending time with my family and friends!

Public Speaking

As a teacher, it is part of my professional responsibility to be a good public speaker. Additionally, as a Curriculum Coordinator and administrator, I am required to speak publicly, to a variety of audiences, on a regular basis.

Regarding a more formal curriculum approach to Public Speaking, I taught Public Speaking to grades 5-8. In addition, I incorporate four public speaking assignments into my curriculum, for every class I teach, each year. I do this because I believe in order to be successful in college and in the work force, one must be able to present their ideas verbally, and more importantly, convincingly.

Speech

As an English teacher at a college preparatory school, public speaking is part of my regular curriculum. Students are taught how to prepare enticing speeches and also taught how to successfully present, using skills such as intonation, inflection, volume, rate, etc. In addition to teaching public speaking as a part of my college-prep curriculum for the past six years, I also teach a Journalism course in which I regularly require the students to report in the same fashion that a news reporter would do so. In the journalism class, public speaking constitutes 35% of the curriculum and final grade. Lastly, I taught a public speaking class when I was teaching at the middle school level.

Study Skills

I have been a MD-state certified teacher for six years. In addition to my six years in the classroom, I host study skills sessions once a week after school for all of my students. I have also worked with the counseling office and the Academic Dean to incorporate study skills workshops at a school-wide level. Lastly, my time spent tutoring over the last three years has better acquainted me with how students study best and how to help them develop these skills so that they can accomplish future studying endeavors independently.

Extremely Helpful — Melissa was extremely helpful preparing my daughter for her SAT. She just took the SAT a week ago and feels pretty confident that she did well on it. She definitely felt like the tutoring made a big difference. Melissa was also friendly, accommodating, and easy to get in touch with. If she's still tutoring next year I plan to send my younger daughter to her for her SAT prep. Thanks! ...
