My name is Sara, and I have experience with teaching all early childhood subject areas, teaching students with Dyslexia, and using the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching language development (reading, writing, spelling, phonics, and phonemic awareness).
I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, I have taught many young children, and I spent 5 years teaching students with Dyslexia ranging in age from seven to sixteen. I have also worked with an adult with Dyslexia acquire skills and strategies to help him become a more efficient reader. I enjoy the opportunity to help individuals of all ages find patterns within the English Language so that they can become more confident, capable readers and writers. I am also able to assist with basic math, science, and social studies skills for elementary school-aged children.

For five years (2007-2012) I worked at a school specifically for children with Dyslexia. We taught students using The Orton-Gillingham approach which was developed by Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham (among others) as they set out to understand more about the Dyslexic brain. I have been through the Associate level training as well as the Certified level, and am currently working on certification which involves supervised hours of teaching, specified readings, and analyzing student psychological profiles.
I received a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Early Childhood/Special Education, both from the University of Florida. I completed my internship teaching in a kindergarten classroom and spent one year as a substitute teacher in public elementary schools. I have five years of experience teaching in a school for children with Dyslexia where I received training in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching Reading, Writing, and Spelling. I used the approach to teach those subjects and have additional experience teaching the core elementary subjects (social studies, math, science, and language arts).
I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education with an ESOL Endorsement from the State of Florida, and 5 years of experience teaching Language Development to students with Dyslexia in the State of South Carolina.
I have been trained in the Orton Gillingham Approach to teaching reading. This is an approach that was founded based upon research that proved to work for successfully teaching individuals with Dyslexia. I believe it would also be effective in teaching English to non-native speakers. It applies systematic, direct teaching in a way that makes the English Language predictable and clear.
In addition to my experience with teaching, I have also spent some time traveling overseas. In 2005 I spent a month in South Africa visiting my husband's family. In 2008 I spent a month in Germany while my husband was there for business. In 2010 I traveled to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti with a group from my church to help rebuild walls and a well that collapsed during the earthquake. I was also able to teach an English lesson to a class of Haitian students who spoke no English.
While visiting these places I was fascinated with the various languages that I encountered. I took interest in the people and tried to learn as much about their language and culture as possible. I enjoy talking with people from other cultures as I attempt to understand their ways of living while also helping them learn more about mine.
I have my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. I have also been trained in the Orton-Gillingham Approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. This approach was established based on research for children with Dyslexia. However, I strongly believe it can help all children as it uses strategies that cater to all learning styles.
