Science and math can be intimidating to some students, but they also have the potential to be exciting and fun. A little patience, creativity, and receptivity on the part of a tutor can make a struggling student confident and successful.
In both mathematics and science, I work with students to create a picture of the whole that they are responsible for understanding. From there we study specific examples and details, creating connections that again tie into the entire unit. I pay attention to the student's response as we work through concepts and adapt my teaching style to fit their needs.
Often my experience over the past five years has been that students struggle with certain subjects not because of an inherent inability to do well, but rather because they have never been taught or have never adopted appropriate organization and study skills. I pass on organization and study strategies to students that have worked well for me in the past.
Most importantly, I want to bring out curiosity and enjoyment in students for these subjects. By weaving games, art, and real world connections into my tutoring sessions, I try to instill a love for learning into students to inspire them in their future studies.
