Learning Spanish can be fun, & in the DMV area there are plenty of opportunities to practice speaking it. Let me help you begin.

I have a BA degree in Spanish from The Ohio State University (OSU) & love to teach & learn foreign languages. Including Spanish, I have also studied Portuguese, Italian, French & German.

While at OSU, I studied abroad in Spain & traveled to Portugal. I have also traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica & 7 West African countries.

I have an MS degree in international relations from Troy State University & love to learn about people from other countries. I personally believe that when you learn a foreign language it's also important to learn the culture of those who speak that language.

As a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, I lived for 3 months in Cape Verde & 3 years in Guinea-Bissau teaching English as a second language. During my time there, I traveled to the Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana & Cape Verde.

Grammar

English grammar can be challenging because often times we don't speak properly and we find ourselves writing the same way as we speak. If we speak grammatically correctly, we are more likely to write grammatically correct.

What has helped me in English grammar was studying foreign languages; it forced me to learn English grammar so that I could understand grammar in other languages.

Spanish

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish from The Ohio State University and love to teach and learn foreign languages.

Writing

Professionally, I write and edit brochures, press releases and other documents. I enjoy writing, but write better on subjects for which I have a passion and/or understanding.

I have written several short poems and one children's book. I have yet to publish the book.

Portuguese

I studied Brazilian Portuguese in college and obtained 240 hours of Portuguese in the Peace Corps, which is equivalent to a college degree.

There is a slight difference in the pronunciation of Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Lusophone countries, and I'm familiar with all.

Although I speak, read and write Portuguese, I only tutor students who are currently studying Portuguese in college.

English

Having studied several foreign languages, I have to know and understand the English language and grammar. Additionally, I write and edit on a daily basis.

ESL/ESOL

Right after leaving the military, I taught English as a second language. Shortly thereafter, I taught English as a second language in the Peace Corps for more than 2 years. I also wrote curricula for 7th and 8th grade students during my 3rd year in the Peace Corps.

Study Skills

As a tutor for several subjects, I not only tutor the student in that particular subject, but I also help the student get organized. Depending on the grade level of the student, I help the student organize his/her weekly assignments and prepare in advance for quizzes and tests.
