Master's degree, Special Ed focus-all subjects k-12.

Hello,

My background includes teaching Adult GED classes and working with students in all subjects at an alternative education school for students with behavioral problems.

I just completed my master's degree in leadership in teaching with a focus on Special Education. This is a career change for me later in life, so I bring a rich and varied background with much life experience.

I am a strong believer in the learning styles theory and look for the unique style in each student.

As a student who struggled in grade school because of unrecognized learning disabilities, (even though my "IQ" test showed above average intelligence) I understand the unique challenges students with learning disabilities and difficulties face.

I am "old school" in that I grew up in the 60's and 70's, but "new school" in that my recent college education encompasses all the latest "best practices" in education today.

I am a former Social Worker and Counselor and work best with students one on one. This is why I have chosen educational tutoring as my new career choice.

I have been substitute teaching at the elementary school level including reading, writing, and math, for 5 years.

Study Skills

I currently work with students on how to study by finding what is important within a given text. I teach "fix it" strategies to make meaning of what is being read and why. One of these strategies is to have a "purpose for reading" in every content area. I show how to find the forest from the trees of confusing and complicated texts by looking at paragraph headings, highlighted words, vocabulary words, photographs and descriptions. One hour minimum. If the lesson goes over an hour by 1-30 minutes, the rate moves up to the next half hour. After 30 minutes, the rate moves up to the next hour.
