I am a caring and qualified home school mother of four and private tutor with over thirteen years of one-on-one teaching experience looking for the opportunity to share my experience with other students and their parents or guardians. I am able to communicate my own love and passion for learning and talk to children of all ages about their interests. I am reliable, punctual, understanding, affirming, patient, and trustworthy. I understand the different modes of learning (auditory, kinesthetic, visual)and I am flexible with regard to students' unique learning styles. I am always willing to listen to parents' concerns for their children.

Most importantly, though, I am optimistic - no matter how bad or how good a student's academic situation is, it can be improved or made better with a little diligence and help!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Through fourteen years of homeschooling my own children and private tutoring as well, I have gained quite a lot of experience, especially for the early learning years. I have successfully helped many students learn or improve reading, spelling, writing, and math skills. Additionally, while working for the Caroline County Board of Education as a home teacher, I assisted children of various ages complete their assignments in all subject areas.

Grammar

I have excellent training in teaching grammar in the traditional format. I can teach well the eight parts of speech and syntax of each, as well as use appropriately the tool of diagramming sentences. I believe the traditional (old school) method is the best way to learn English grammar, retain it for use, and apply it in proper speaking and writing.

Phonics

I am a firm believer that learning phonics is fundamental to learning to read. The 70 or so phonograms are the building blocks of the written language and to ignore this fact is like ignoring the fact that one needs air to breathe! It is just that important. In my homeshooling efforts for the past 14 years, I have made phonics the primary focus in teaching my own children to read, and we have had great success, even with my eldest who has a learning disability.

Study Skills

I feel qualified to tutor a student in how to cultivate excellent study skills and habits because I, myself, am an organized student and I have helped others become so. As a professional accountant for twelve years before leaving my position to care for my children, I acquired many transferable organizational skills which can be employed by a student of any subject. Through homeschooling, I have assisted my own children in developing their own methods of studying and learning and I continue to expand my own.
