I was a non-traditional student when I decided to go back to school and receive my BA and MA in English. I wondered if I would feel out of place since I was a mother of teens when I took a leap of faith and went back to school. I made friends of all ages and enjoyed my academic career beyond my wildest expectations. It is a joy to see the "light" come on when students finally understand a subject or process.
I tutored for almost two years in the writing center and taught basic English 1010 and 1020 along with Introduction to Literature which includes short stories, drama, and poetry. Many times I include film and children's literature in my teaching as well.
In my spare time I tutor executives from other countries and their families so that they learn to speak English like Americans. When students learn a language here or abroad they are learning a formal language, but we don't speak like that. We speak slang, or use sarcasm as well as a great deal of idioms which are very hard for the foreign speaker to understand. I try to help with that issue.
I enjoy teaching and the rewards are great because one more person becomes competent in the subject they are seeking to excel in. I hope to be able to help.
Most students that have ADD or ADHD have trouble focusing on subjects they find tedious or problematic. I have two children of my own that dealt with this problem and have worked extensively with students suffering with lack of focus. Sometimes medications will help or many times diet is also beneficial. I can work with your student and find interesting ways of presenting subjects to help them focus. I find that exercise and running off a little extra steam is also good for the hyperactive student. Let's work together to find a way that will help this student excel in school and truly love to learn and seek knowledge
I enjoy American History and found this subject one of my favorites while getting my degree in English. I find each aspect of our country to be one that we can learn lessons from and perhaps make a difference in how we handle various aspects of our lives.
As an artist for more than 30 years, I have a good grasp on the necessities for the beginner to learn various techniques and concepts for drawing. I work in pencil, charcoal and pastels on various papers. The techniques and concepts for drawing are varied. I work with both children and adults and would like to help find the artist hidden deep within you.
Most students that have Dyslexia have trouble focusing on subjects they find tedious or problematic. I have two children of my own that dealt with this problem and have worked extensively with students suffering with lack of focus. Sometimes medications will help or sometimes diet is also beneficial. I can work with your student and find interesting ways of presenting subjects to help them deal with their specific dyslexic problems. Reading and communication skills are the most severe for dyslexics so lets work together to find a way to help work around the issues.
I have a Master's in English. I teach English composition, writing, argumentative writing, grammar and MLA and APA formats. I am familiar with World Literature, Post Colonial, Children's Lit and British Lit and can help students write papers about literature, film and other subjects.
I have worked with executives and families that come to this country to work or go to school and wish to be more fluent in English, particularly informal speak such as slang and the use of idioms.
I teach writing, speaking, and reading. For children, I play games, use artwork and tell stories to make learning fun. With adults, I have used cooking, sports, television and movies along with activities to help students become more familiar with the language.
I can help students perfect their grammar techniques.
I have taught painting and am an accomplished portrait and landscape artist as well as a muralist. I paint in acrylics on canvas. I have also painted on furniture and fabrics. I enjoy oils, but love the flexibility of acrylics, plus with children, the drying time is quick!
I have taught reading at the college level for students that need help is mastering reading techniques and skills. I feel that my own love of reading enhances my ability to create that love in others.
I am totally qualified to help you learn to speak, write and read English as your second language. I have worked with Indian natives and Japanese and Spanish speaking natives to learn English and found it one of my most enjoyable experiences for me and for my students.
