My name is Tom, and I'm a math and physics tutor for high school and college students. I'm also an engineer at a local manufacturing company here in Columbia, MD.

In high school, calculus and physics were the two subjects that ignited my enthusiasm to become an engineer. Before graduation I was able to earn 5's on both the calc AB/BC, and physics mechanics and E&M AP exams. The difference maker was excellent teaching (I'm a Mt. Hebron High alum) combined with an engaging subject matter. I also graduated college in 2010 with a 3.9 GPA and cum laude honors, double-majoring in mechanical engineering and philosophy. Bottom line - I know what it takes to (1) earn high marks in calc and physics, and (2) learn this material so that it sticks long-term.

I do things a little differently than most tutors. The last thing an already-stressed teenager needs is more work on top of their assignments for class. So I work with students to help them get through their classwork and learn the material, while at the same time preparing them to ace exams, earn A.P. credit, and get ready for the rigors of a college education - all with time left over to still enjoy being a kid.

If you're interested in working with me, shoot me an email. I'll send over some additional information about my service.

I also would be happy to meet with you, at your convenience, for a free consultation to sketch out how I can help your student get on track and really start nailing their math or physics.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have 5+ years of tutoring experience in calculus and calculus-related subjects. Most recently, I have worked with students at UMBC in college level calculus courses for the past year and a half.

Calculus became one of my favorite subjects back in high school, where I was able to earn 5's on both the AB and BC calculus AP exams back in 2005 and 2006. I also tutored students in algebra and pre-calculus as a member of National Honors Society.

I graduated with honors from University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, with a large portion of that curriculum dealing with the application of fundamental mathematics concepts. I now apply those concepts on a daily basis as an engineer at a local manufacturing company here in Columbia, MD.

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I earned a 3.91 GPA and graduated Cum Laude with Departmental Honors in Engineering.

I have informally tutored students in Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Controls engineering courses throughout college. I formally tutored an engineering student at UMBC last year in Intro to Engineering, Calculus, and Physics.

I'm also a full-time Engineering team leader at Bowles Fluidics Corp. in Columbia, MD.

Physics

I have 5 years of tutoring experience in Physics and Physics-related subjects. Most recently, I have worked with students at UMBC in college level Physics courses for the past year and a half.

Physics became my favorite subject back in High School, where I was able to earn 5's on both the Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism Physics AP exams back in 2006.
