I have tutored pre-college math for two years at Howard Community College in their Learning Assistance Center; I have also tutored private students (high school and junior high). I currently tutor students in Silver Spring who are studying to get their GEDs.
It's true--I didn't major in Math. I majored in Philosophy! But I come from a family of math teachers and tutors, and the ability to explain things clearly (learned from Philosophy) has become quite handy as I have ended up making a living for myself teaching Math.
My family (all those math tutors) feels pretty strongly that many more people can do math than think they can! Sometimes all it takes is a different or clearer explanation; often it takes encouragement; always it takes work--but the work becomes fun once you realize that you are getting it! My favorite part of tutoring is seeing students who thought they couldn't do math light up when they realize they can.
Though I don't have student ratings up on WyzAnt, I do have references from pleased former (and current) students which I am willing to pass on.
