NOTE: I currently only have a couple openings for exam and test (SAT/GRE) prep this December/January. These slots are from 3 till 4:30 PM and 11-12 AM at a public location in the Columbia area.

I am a "jack of all trades" tutor with the quality of a specialist. I specialize in high school and college level math, but have tutored grade school reading and math as well. I help with test prep, including GRE and SAT prep. My background is extensive--I graduated salutatorian of my high school class, am a member of Alpha Sigma Nu--Jesuit Honors Society, and I hold both a degree in engineering from Loyola College in Maryland and a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Towson University. It only took a year as an engineer to realize that, while I was a good engineer, it was not my passion. I became a high school math teacher and taught for 3.5 years--until the birth of my son in 2010. Now I continue that passion through tutoring.

I have been tutoring for 5 years and hope to eventually make this my full-time career. I love inspiring students to do their best, and I enjoy working with the wide age range that I have been privileged to work with. I have tutored Kindergartners, grade-school children, teens, and adults and have been successful with and enjoyed every age group.

My tutoring style can be summed up in one word: passion. I have a lot of energy and joy with which I deliver my lessons. I am about as patient a person as you can find and also very positive. My educational background and experience both as a personal tutor and tutor for leading tutoring companies in the area show that I have more to bring to the table than just a great personality.

I can't wait to be the difference you've been waiting for. Do not hesitate to contact me! I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have 3 1/2 years experience teaching Algebra and Geometry at the high school level--the main components of the ACT Math test.

Algebra 1

I have 3 1/2 years experience as an Algebra II teacher. While teaching Algebra II, I frequently worked to help with HSA remediation. In addition, I have tutored Algebra I on a number of occasions.

Algebra 2

I have 3 1/2 years experience teaching Algebra II at the high school level as well as tutoring Algebra II. I have tutored Algebra II both in-person and online.

Biology

I have a strong interest in the life sciences and earned a minor in Biology from Loyola College.

Biostatistics

I hold a minor in Biology from Loyola College (Now University) in MD. I also hold a BSES in Engineering from Loyola and have 3 + years experience as a high school math teacher. In addition, I have tutored statistics numerous times over the past 5 years.

Calculus

I majored in Engineering in college, so Calculus was something I used on a daily basis for 4 years. Since college I have tutored both high school and college students in Calculus to keep my skills fresh. It is my favorite of the math classes to work with although it is certainly the most challenging (second to statistics) for students taking it!

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutor younger students on a regular basis, especially in math/science. However, I spent a summer tutoring elementary english/reading, writing, and math with Sylvan Learning Centers and would be more than happy to tutor english and writing to this age group as well.

Elementary Math

I am currently tutoring 3 students in elementary math (entering 4th - 7th grade). I enjoy working with this age group and would love to work with more younger students.

Elementary Science

I have a passion for science and hold a minor in Biology from Loyola College (now University) in MD. When I became a teacher, I applied to be both a Biology and Math teacher. It was only due to the needs of the school system at that time that I became a high school math teacher.

English

I spent a summer tutoring with Sylvan Learning Centers (2009). I predominantly tutored English and Writing at that time. I know the "Sylvan way" to help students to improve their skills in this area and would be happy to provide quality instruction to your child.

Geometry

I have 3 1/2 years experience teaching Geometry at the high school level (both standard and honors).

GRE

I have experience tutoring students in both the GRE and the SAT.

Praxis

I hold an Advanced MD State Teacher Certification. I passed the Praxis on my first attempt and received an award for my performance on the math portion.

Prealgebra

I have 3 1/2 years experience teaching Algebra II at the high school level. Over the last 5 years, I have tutored Pre-Algebra at least once a year.

SAT Math

I have 3+ years experience teaching Algebra II and Geometry on the high school level--the core content required on the SAT. In addition, I have prepared several students for the SAT, GRE, and Praxis over the last few years.

Statistics

Statistics is one of my favorite subjects to tutor as well as my most frequently requested. I know that it can be a "foreign language" to many students--math is tricky to begin with and stats is different than any other math you will take. I am able to explain statistics in a way that weeds out the "math talk" and makes it simple to understand.

Study Skills

I have experience tutoring Study Skills with Sylvan Learning Center (Summer 2009). I mentored a young man (a foster child in a group home) for the past 6 years, working with him on organization and study skills. I also have 3 + years experience teaching high school, where I coached numerous students on study skills.

Trigonometry

I just finished teaching/tutoring Pre-Calc to two wonderful GT students in Howard County. I would be more than happy to help you master it as well!

A hardworking and involved tutor — Leah C. has been a great tutor for my son. Her teaching style resonates very well with him and he looks forward for tutoring with her. She has really made a huge difference in his grades in pre-calculus this year. She also worked with him on improving his organizing abilities. I look forward to having her tutor my son next year too.
