I love teaching and enjoy watching my students blossom.

My focus is in teaching younger students ranging from Pre-K to Elementary as well as those children needing Special Education assistance. I have a considerable amount of experience teaching the beginning and basic skills needed to be successful in school.

As for my background, I am a retired teacher who has taught in St. Mary's, Charles, and Prince Georges counties. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from Ohio State University and have done some graduate work at Johns Hopkins University School of Education. I love working with children and gain great satisfaction when a student is learning.

I am very knowledgeable in subjects taught in the elementary grades for Regular Education students. With my Special Education students I have always been very successful in determining and meeting their needs. With all my students I first build a relationship and then meet their needs on whatever level they might be on.

My goal is always to meet the student's needs - both educationally and emotionally - when it comes to learning. I have experience working with children who are Pre-K, Elementary, ADD/ADHD, Autistic, Learning Disabled, and Developmentally Disabled. I use positive reinforcement to motivate my students. I have extensive experience in developing and implementing Individual Educational Plans. I am able to set realistic goals and objectives based on the parent's desire and the student's needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Bachelor Degree In Special Education for grades K-6. I have team taught in a regular classroom and taught in a resource room to assist these students to be successful. I have helped students with organizational skills which helps them be more successful in the classroom. I have worked with increasing time on tasks. I work with students with many positive reinforcements to maintain their attention. I am presently retired from a wonderful teaching experience and with many rewards from students successes.

Aspergers

I am a retired special education teacher and have experience with working with students in a public school system. I have specialized in increasing communication skills for these students. I have helped them learn to communicate in everyday conversation by increasing their confidence in themselves. I believe in meeting the student's needs at their present level and working toward new goals and objectives.

Autism

I am an experienced teacher. I have been successful in improving communication skills with Autistic children. I have also been able to improve their success in a public school system by having them integrated in regular education classroom. I have worked with students with different levels of Autism. I have improved students language skills and their success in everyday life. I have successfully taught different types of academic subject matter to these students. I have seen these students blossom with the correct teaching methods which I have.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a retired Special Education teacher. I work with students who need extra help to reach their grade level expectations. I have taught in a resource room setting with a variety of student needs. I have been successful with having students improve their performance.

Elementary Math

I am an experienced Special Education teacher and I pride myself in bringing elementary age students to grade level expectations. I use hands on activities and repetition to teach my students. When I use repetition I use the same subject matter by different materials to facilitate learning. I have been successful in meeting my students needs.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked successfully with students whose English is a second language. I have worked in classrooms where students have had no English skills. I work with enthusiasm and positive reinforcement.

Phonics

I am a retired Special Education teacher. I use phonics to teach reading. I begin with teaching consonant beginning sounds then ending sounds. I then teach long vowels, after accomplishing this skill I teach short vowels. I teach all of the phonemic awareness skills.

Reading

I am an experienced Special Education teacher and gain great satisfaction in bringing my students up to grade level expectations. I have experience both in working in a resource room and in a regular classroom. I use phonics and whole language to teach reading. I use phonics to teach the beginning stages of reading and it also helps in writing. With the use of whole language I find the use of pictures helps in the understanding of the words and the story. With older students I also use phonics to teach new words and use story telling to help with understanding and with writing.

Special Needs

I have a Bachelor Degree in Special Education and am presently retired. I have taught a variety of special needs students. I have had all ranges of Developmentally Disabled, Learning Disabilities and Autistic students in my classrooms. I have taught in the public school system in regular elementary school environment. I have always had a good relationship with parents and am always willing to advocate for the students best interest.

I focus on spelling when teaching phonics for reading and assisting with writing. I enjoy seeing my students reach grade level expectation. I use repetition and positive reinforce to facilitate learning.

Study Skills

I have helped students with organizational skills which sometimes can hinder their study skills. I teach how to read for content and comprehension. I believe repetition with different materials but same subject matter helps in learning. I work with time on task and concentration level. I work with elementary age children.

Vocabulary

I have worked in a resource room and a regular classroom and am a retired Special Education teacher. I increase a student's vocabulary through understanding when reading. Depending on the student's age I use pictures to assist in the understanding of words. For older students I use context when reading to increase their vocabulary.
