I currently teach professional writing at the University of Maryland College Park. In addition, I have taught high school reading, English, and study skills at the Jemicy School, Montgomery County Public Schools, and Howard County Public Schools. I have also taught composition and reading at Howard Community College.
I am certified in special ed K-12 and reading through MSDE. I also have certification in poetry therapy and drama in education. My poems and essays have been published in the following publications: The Little Patuxent Review, Praxilla, The Gunpowder Review, The Museletter, and On Purpose Woman.
Because my teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that everyone can learn when given the proper tools, my students gain confidence in themselves while they are learning essential content and organizational skills. My passion lies in helping students understand and apply their unique learning styles as well as use their strongest areas of intelligence for growth and achievement.
To engage students in learning, I use a variety of brain-based learning approaches, multiple intelligences strategies, and multisensory activities. I also slip in poetry and creativity when you least expect it! My skills as a professional writer and poet enable me to coax even reluctant writers to elaborate on their ideas. In addition, I am particularly good at connecting with students who struggle with motivation and organizational skills. Many such students succeed once they learn more about themselves as learners and have some support for their unique challenges.
In addition to having been a speech therapist, I have taught numerous students of all ages how to read. I am a skilled in helping dyslexic students make sense of the written word, read easily and fluently, and express themselves competently in writing. I have training and experience in using Wilson Reading to teach the basics of word study and decoding.
In addition to having been a speech therapist, I have taught writing to both native speakers and ESL learners. I use a variety of methods to help my students become competent writers who can express themselves with confidence.
