Here's a little bit about me:
I currently work in Columbia, MD, as a Research Scientist at a local biomedical device company full time. I enjoy the outdoors and like to have a good time as well as keep my mind sharp by learning new things all the time.
I have a bachelor's in Chemistry from the University of Delaware (2006) and a Master of Science in Materials Engineering from Drexel University (2011). I have a general enthusiasm for History, Economics, and Government and keep up with current events and politics.
My Experience teaching
I recently taught as an adjunct professor of Chemistry at Rowan University. While I don't have a formal teaching certificate, I love teaching and my students appreciate my approach to teaching. Maybe I'll be your chemistry teacher one day!
I have tutored many friends throughout high school and college in chemistry. I have also tutored privately for several years.
Chemistry and science in general are complex topics, but they can be taught effectively using everyday circumstances. Chemistry in its purest form is just about relationships. When people think of chemistry, they get caught up in numbers and complex science, but when the relationships between materials are shown, it all fits together like a puzzle. When it "clicks," it's so incredibly useful in daily life. This the primary technique of how I get my students to realize the cool things about chemistry and how to remember them.
I apply this same technique to history and government. Everything has a reason as to why it happened or existed. We create a mental ladder between events, laws, polices, etc. Whenever we come across a new one, we ask, "why?" As these "why's" are answered, the web of information grows and a greater understanding of the topic ensues.
About Me and My Hours
Currently, I work at a local biomedical company in Columbia, MD as a Research Scientist during normal business hours and live nearby. For tutoring, I have flexible hours on Sundays. I ask for about 1 week's notice to start a new student. I need that for prep and for scheduling purposes. See my cancellation policy below.
Let's Get Going!
I'm a friendly guy with a lot of energy. The tutor student relationship is crucial to having a successful learning environment. I like to keep the environment relaxed, yet I demand private study and some productive work ethic both in and out of the tutoring session. I am not there to do your homework, I'm there to help you through the concepts so you can do the homework yourself. After all, I won't be there when you take the test!
See you at our first session!
I make every effort to schedule my students around conflicts. I realize that sometimes there are sports practices or games, illnesses, etc and most of the time I can rework my schedule in a short amount of time. I will confirm appointments two days in advance and lock in my schedule. If an appointment is scheduled and then canceled or rescheduled before the 24 hour mark and I cannot "work my magic" to fix the situation, half an hour will be charged. If cancellation or rescheduling is requested within 24 hours of the scheduled start time and I cannot fix the situation, a full hour fee will be charged.
I have a minor in biochemistry from University of Delaware. This incorporates detailed knowledge of protein structure and cell biology. I also took further courses in my Materials Science degree as my concentration was in Biomaterials. Genetic coding and molecular biology courses were taken as part of this degree.
Chemistry really is my passion. I have two degrees in chemistry: a Bachelors degree from University of Delaware and a Masters in Materials Science and Engineering from Drexel. I work as a chemist as my day job at a local biomedical company. I've also tutored college level and high school level chemistry students. I've been told that I am very good at explaining the concepts and that I have a great level of patience. I look forward to tutoring your chemistry student!
I obtained a history minor while at the University of Delaware. I also took the AP exam in European history in high school and scored a 4 on the exam. I have a great interest in European history and have traveled to Europe several times specifically to see things I have learned in European history. I enjoy reading books on the World wars and how European relations affected the initiation and outcome.
While I have no formal degree in Government and politics, I have a great passion for it. I took government classes in highschool scoring a 5 on the AP exam in Government. I encourage everyone to read and understand the constitution and its amendments. The best way to be an American citizen is to understand how our government works and participate!
Making a big difference for my child — After two meetings with Kevin, my son got an A on his chemistry test. Prior to his tutoring, he was getting C's and D's. Money well spent. ...
