Powerful SAT/PSAT/ACT Preparation
With years of experience in SAT/PSAT/ACT preparation under my belt, I will work with your student to reach his or her full potential and raise their scores dramatically. I believe that these standardized tests are perfect opportunities not only to show colleges how bright your child is but also to help your child develop study skills that will help them in college.

Powerful Writing Coaching
As an award winning journalist, editor, and poet, I will work with your student think more clearly and write more eloquently at any level whether it is elementary school or college (and beyond).

Additional Subjects
After over five years of tutoring students in English, Chinese, SAT/ACT test prep, ESOL, reading and writing, and more, I have developed a unique tutoring philosophy that helps me get results for all my students.

The number 1 obstacle I see for most of my students is a lack of confidence. They are embarrassed that they can't read as fast as their peers or they are self-conscious about their accent. Or they simply feel lost in the SAT writing section.. My goal for every student is for them to feel so confident and comfortable in their own abilities that they will not only be good at what they are doing but that they will love doing it. They will find studying the subject rewarding and fun. My ultimate goal for every student is that they will not need me anymore and have the confidence to excel in their studies and in life.

I always to follow the interests of students. I make material relevant and interesting for my students because then it will be more memorable. I believe in hard work and creative thinking and I strive to instill that in all my students. For every student I instill a lifelong love of learning in my students that will serve them through college and beyond.

I am young and energetic, and students love that they can relate to me and aren't intimated by me.

As a journalist, educator, and life coach I have an enormously diverse background, which allows me to connect with students at many levels. I love teaching and I truly believe that helping our students is one of the most important ways we can change the world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I received my ADHD coaching certification in January 2013 from the ADHD coaching association and I have had several ADHD students since then.

I have experience working with elementary to high school ADHD students and I work individually with each one to determine best practices for each individual student. In addition, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to affect changes in the way students think and approach their homework!

Adobe InDesign

I used InDesign for 5 years during my time as Editor-in-Chief of JJ Express Magazine.

Adobe Photoshop

I have taken a design class at the Pratt Institute for design and am very familiar with Photoshop.

Chinese

I have studied Chinese for four years in college. I have also taught Chinese to elementary schoolers for two years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have received my Maine certification in elementary education at the University of Maine.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESOL to elementary schoolers for two years. I was certified as an ESOL teacher by Montgomery County Public Schools.

Study Skills

I am experienced tutor in many subjects and I have helped numerous students in studying for many subjects. I have received an elementary education teaching certificate from the University of Maine, in which we extensively covered study skill techniques and how best to support students who are struggling with study skills. I know how to support students based on their unique learning styles, from kinesthetic to aural and I have developed several ways to help students get their work organized.

Writing

I've been an editor and journalist for over five years, working for Reader's Digest, The Gazette, the Washington Post, New York Parenting, Asian Fortune, Washington Parent, and many more publications. I pride myself in succinct, powerful, and effective writing. Clear writing is clear thinking and I help students not only love the writing process but communicate in the most clear and powerful way possible.

Yoga

I was certified in Hatha Yoga 4 years ago and have been teaching yoga since then. I am skilled at Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Kundalini yoga, and therapeutic yoga. I have taught large classes as well as one-on-one and I help students discover a love of yoga within themselves.
