I retired from the Air Force after serving 20 years of active duty service in 2005. Since then, I have been substituting for about 8 years in the Prince Georges County at a local high school. I have a bachelor degree in Business Management and a master's in Procurement/Acquisition Management. I also have 3 PhD classes in Special Education where I wrote a total of 60 pages of research on kids with learning deficiencies. I used to mentored kids from the local area in Arlington, Va. when I was stationed at Ft Myer while working at the Pentagon between 1992-1996. This program was centered around kids who were experiencing a problem in various subjects during that time. They were brought to the Pentagon after school and we met for one hour down in the cafeteria.
I also worked in a program called Upward Bound at Prince Georges Community College for about 4 years. This program was designed for young high schoolers to go to college and in addition would also offer summer courses in Math, Science, and Computers. My tutoring style for reading would depend on the student and where the learning difficulty may lie. Learning how to read has to broken down to first knowing the alphabets, recognizing the sounds when putting one or two letters together. Understanding the mechanics of reading should ultimately lead to a free flow of expression coming from an individual. I would definitely give my whole-hearted attention to the student and the problem in effort to get him or her to read. I have also worked with many kids in the Special Education department where patience and compassion is really two key traits I have. I have the discipline and the ability to get the job done.
