Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL (Physics)
Johns Hopkins (Master's)
University of Maryland at Baltimore County (Master's)
I tutor Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. My students range from the Elementary to the PhD level.
Since 2007, tutoring has been a passion for me. My interest in learning is infectious, and my tutoring style is both friendly and engaging.
I joined WyzAnt.com in the Spring of 2011, and since then have tutored nearly full time. My students range in age from 8 to 38. In each case, they sought to fill gaps that their classes left behind. Traditional education offers a one-size-fits-most model. The students who benefit the most from tutoring are those who fall outside that model.
My BS degree was earned at the Florida Institute of Technology in Physics, and I have two Masters degrees: one in Mathematics and the other in Physics. They were obtained from the University of Maryland and from Johns Hopkins University. My teachers were some of the best in the country, and I've adopted their excitement and dynamism to my teaching style.
In Mathematics, my tutoring experience includes:
- Algebra I & II
- Plane & Analytic Geometry
- Probability & Statistics
- Number Theory
- Differential Equations -- Ordinary and Partial
- Real & Complex Analysis
- Numerical Analysis
In the Sciences, my tutoring experience includes:
- Physics (Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Optics, Electricity & Magnetism)
- High School Chemistry (Inorganic only), Biology, and Earth Science.
In Computer Science, my tutoring experience includes:
- Programming languages: Perl, Python, Java, and the R Statistical Programming Language
- Algorithms and their analysis
- Linux, especially training for certifications such as the LPI and RHCE
Need help with Microsoft Word or Excel? Then I'm the one for you, especially if you need help with Pivot Tables!
Need help preparing for the SAT, GMAT, GRE, GED, or for class tests? Recently, I took five of the standardized tests that prospective teachers are required to take. These tests, called the PRAXIS Series, are similar to the SAT and the GRE, but are most like the GED. On both the Mathematics and Physics Content tests, I scored in the top 15% of fellow test takers.
Pursuing Advance Placement? I've tutored students taking:
- AP Calculus AB & BC
- AP Physics B & C
- AP Computer Science A
- AP Statistics
- AP Chemistry
- AP Environmental Science
Need help in advanced areas? My tutoring experience includes these subjects and using these textbooks:
Biology – O'Reilly's Perl Programming for Bioinformatics
Cryptography – Stinson's Cryptography: Theory & Practice
Discreet Mathematics – Epp's Discrete Mathematics with Applications
Economics & Game Theory – Montet & Serra's Game Theory & Economics
Environmental Sci – Cunninghams' Environmental Science: A Global Concern
Electrodynamics – Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics
Algebraic Prog – Luenberger's Intro to Linear & Nonlinear Programming
Functional Prog -- Learn You a Haskell for a Great Good
Mechanics – Goldstein's Classical Mechanics
Statistical Programming – Muenchen's R for SAS and SPSS Users

Mr. H is highly skilled in complex Math. He is very patient, assists and works with you until you understand the problem. I have only great things to say about Mr. H. Within one-hour of contacting Mr. H, he answered me promptly and is highly professional. Mr. H comes highly recommended.
Michael has been a Godsend for my son's physics tutoring sessions. He is very patient and explains the material very well.
Michael was very helpful and easy to work with. I was glad that he was able to help me in a timely manner.
Michael is excellent, he is a great tutor and very patient with my children. Michael you are the best, and I would recommend you to all my friends.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I started to program computers in 1970 using BASIC and FORTRAN. Since then, I have learned and written programs in Visual Basic, C, C++, Perl, and Python. While not a full-time programmer, nevertheless, I have kept up with the evolving standards and continue keeping my skills sharp. Programming computers is very enjoyable, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience.
As a working Physicist, I did research for over 15 years in acoustics, a field that requires extensive familiarity with differential equations (both ordinary and partial). Additionally, I have tutoring experience with both college and graduate students in the subject.
I have used Linux as my primary operating system since 2001, and have since earned certification through the Linux Professional Institute.
My first personal computer was an Apple IIe (circa 1985), and since then have used Macintosh as my second most favored operating system (after Linux). Macintosh X is based on the rock-solid BSD operating system. I love it!
Since 2007, I have earned several certifications (LPI and CompTIA+) in Linux administration, which require basic and intermediate level knowledge of networks. As a part of my daily work, I maintain networks for small businesses and apartment complexes.
I have used Perl for the last five years to help administer Linux servers and to help transform data to new formats. Perl is very easy to use and very powerful. Recently, Brainbench.com certified my knowledge in Perl.
In the Fall of 2011, I took the PRAXIS I and II tests, and received better-than-average scores on each test. On the Content tests (Series II) my scores on the Math and the Physics tests earned me a Recognition of Excellence (ROE) designation. Only the best 1 in 7 test takers get that designation.
I have been using UNIX on an on-and-off basis since the 1980s. Since 2002, I have used the four most popular versions of UNIX most: Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD, and my use has been heavy. Not only do I use them as desktop operating systems, but also as servers for websites, firewalls, and backup services. My knowledge level in these systems is considerably beyond average.
