Communication is a basic need for everyone. With a background in early childhood education, elementary education, web site development, and sign language, communication is a focus that encompasses all of these topics. I offer several subjects on the elementary level to help with basic skills as well as subjects for adults. Learning is a lifelong joy!
Each child is unique. What learning styles, strengths, and interests does your child have? I focus on how the child learns best and use a variety of teaching styles suited to the child's needs.
As an example, I'm the mother of two completely different children. Two different styles of teaching was needed for them. My daughter, who was artistic, worked best with drawing and visual art tools and songs or rhythmic poems with challenging lessons, but listening to music while she worked was not a distraction. My son, who was very curious and distractible, needed more structure to concentrate and materials that helped with his interest, such as manipulatives for math and books for topics he enjoyed. Both are currently successful adults.
While I was raising my children, I was a certified and accredited child care provider. I provided a learning center for both preschool and school-aged children.
Starting in 1990, I began teaching at the public schools with kindergarten children in the deaf and hard-of-hearing program. Even though it was considered special education, their curriculum was the same as all the others in their grade level in the county. When I was offered a part-time job as a director of religious education, I became a substitute teacher for preschool to 6th grade. 22+ yrs. later I am still working with children in that program.
I love working with children and try to stir their natural enjoyment of learning. I engage all senses as much as possible, using different methods until I find what works for each child. Every child can learn; I have no doubt about that.
In 1996, I started doing web site development work along with substitute teaching. I love to learn so I keep learning the latest technology and am available to teach at your skill level and your pace. I have taught all ages. Wordpress is my current specialty as a very versatile content management system for creating web sites and/or blogs for online communication. I also have expertise in locating information quickly even as the web increases in size.
Sign language is another subject I teach at the beginning and intermediate level. I use sign language to communicate with the deaf students I teach and have taught several classes for adults and mixed ages. Sign language is not just for communicating with the deaf as it can be used when you have laryngitis or another speaking inability, when you need to communicate in any environment where speaking is difficult (such as, underwater for divers) or noise needs to be limited. Babies can learn to sign before they speak, so often parents like to learn it to teach to their infants. Whatever the reason, learning sign language helps you consider your overall communication at another level.
