To Parents and Students:

Please note that I have been a classroom teacher and instructional tutor for more than a decade. I have received Certified Professional Development training with The Department of Federal Programs in the Title I Program through the Prince George's County Public School System for 15 years with Continuing Education Classes annually since that time. In Spring 2013 I completed an Independent Clinician/Tutor for Hire Contract with DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools)conducting Remedial Reading and Essay Writing Skills Workshops for students grades 9-12 in preparation for Scholastic-Academic Testing Readiness.

I prefer primary grade students with special emphasis targeted at assisting students in grades 1st-6th grades, but will work with students 8-12th grades/adult learners if professional opportunities arise or are referred to me. I am a very creative teacher who has enjoyed a very satisfying successful teaching career working with students/parents from a variety of learning challenges.

My preferred areas of student assessment includes: Comprehensive Reading skills, Vocabulary Building, Phonemic Awareness, Primary/Middle School Readiness skills (all subjects), Essay Writing, and all Core Subjects needed for Academic Instruction and Testing Preparation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a contained classroom teacher for more than 20 years and I have taught grades 1-6 core subjects which include reading, math, language arts, social studies (history), science and vocabulary.

I always insist on a pre-meet & greet interview with parents and perspective student so I can gain access to and review any and all school reports such as report cards, progress reports, secure teacher/parent comments or other academic ability documents (IEP) if necessary.

Finally, I schedule a time to administer a SRI or Scholastic Reading Inventory which is a series of reading test for school students in elementary through high school. This assessment measures a reader's ability in relation to the difficulty of specific text. (Note: Parents are advised of the results of the SRI and at that time we can discuss the arrangements needed to proceed if desired.

Elementary Math

I have been teaching elementary school math for approximately 15 years and middle school math for the past six years.

I have used basic math practice exercises to create a foundation for encouraging students to learn to love and use math in everyday life.

I have taught creative math lessons for every grade level from elementary to middle school-aged students and I have been very persuasive in convincing those students that math can be fun and not frightening.


I have been teaching grammar for my entire teaching career (20 plus years) and take special pride in coaching students to master basic sentence construction by applying appropriate grammar rules.

I have several helpful lesson strategies that I use to help students to successfully include all of the parts of speech needed to improve their writing mechanics.

Finally, I find it worthwhile to mention that I use several resources that help students to employ self-correct methods to correct grammar mistakes when preparing written/oral assignments.


I have taught Grades 1,2,3,4,5 Phonics using a variety of methods to include the Open Court Publishing Company teaching materials and have even used those primary grades materials helpful in upper grades learners. The Open Court methods use word attack skills, blends, phonemes, phonemic awareness, segmenting and other tools to promote and engage learners at all levels. I have also acquired for my personal use and the benefit of my students sound cards, practice sheets,and other hands-on materials to encourage their interest in becoming a more fluent reader.

Finally, I would like to mention that I have experienced great success using the Houghton-Mifflin Reading materials with students Grades 5-8; & 9-12.


I have been teaching reading for over 20 years and I am delighted to report that reading is the academic subject I enjoy teaching the most.

I find teaching reading to emergent readers or encouraging and engaging progressive learners to be very rewarding.

I am an avid reader and I work very hard to develop a life-long love for reading books in the hearts and minds of the students I teach.


I have been teaching vocabulary skills for more than 20 years as well and I find it very exciting and challenging to introduce students to new vocabulary words on a daily basis.

My daily theme is "Today is a GREAT Day to Learn Something New!" especially new words.

I believe learning and building new vocabulary is an excellent way to develop strong writing skills.
