My name is Suraju (sir-ah-jew) and I look forward to being able to assist with your tutoring endeavors! I have an affinity and intrigue towards advising and tutoring at all educational levels and a dedication and passion to help others achieve their goals. With an amalgamation of Higher Education, Film, Science, Math & Technology and English skills, I would be privileged to help your student become a better learner.
The last few years of my life have been dedicated to becoming a better professional within higher education. My most recent position was at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in the Office of Residence Life - from August of 2010 to June of 2012. Working in Residence Life provided me extensive exposure to customer service, counseling support and student assistance. Working with students within campus housing allowed me the opportunity to cater to their needs in multiple areas, including general education. Facilitating initiatives to support MICA’s community was essential; assisting students on a personal basis in all facets was equally important. The professional experience inspired me to pursue my Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, which I am doing presently at Capella University, online.
My tutoring methods can be considered a method of "challenge and support". Developed by Nevitt Sanford in 1967, the Theory of Support & Challenge is as follows:
"Sanford developed his theory for student development based on a balance of challenge and support. Too much support with too little challenge creates a comfortable environment for the student, where little development is possible. However, too little support with too much challenge makes development an impossible and negative experience."
I do my best to encourage students to be self-sufficient in their learning and application, but I am simultaneously willing to aid, where and however necessary. The theory has served me well, while at MICA, as well as when tutoring or assisting other students with certain subjects and projects. My experience with tutoring started at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in 2002 - specifically with chemistry-related subjects and mathematics; through my undergraduate career at Morgan State University from 2004 to 2008, subjects included all aspects of English, chemistry, video production, photography and computer competency; currently, I perform advising duties and assist in English, film, photography, computer competency and general K-12 subjects.
I look forward to the prospective opportunity to learn more about and work with you as a student or parent. To aid in your success would be a privilege. Thank you for your time and consideration; it would be a true pleasure to work with you in the future!
