Our daughter has struggled with math over the last few years. We contacted James through WyzAnt to work with her to improve her skills in Pre-Calculus and prepare for upcoming SATs. Great Tutor - Not only is James a patient tutor, he has a great sense of humor. He stayed up very late with my daughter to be sure she caught up on her work. He makes sure my daughters can work through the entire problem themselves before moving on. He looks out for you.
Update 5/18/13: Our daughter just passed her college Algebra class with the grade she was looking for, thanks, in large part to James. James was extremely accommodating with her as far as scheduling during the last few weeks of class as she prepared for her final. He made sure she understood the concepts before she moved on so that she felt confident for her exam, and, in fact, that is exactly what happened. Honestly, he was the perfect tutor and we have and would recommend him to anyone.

You are helping my son with not only his math but his confidence. Here's what he told me as we walked to our car following our first session with you, "Dad, I feel smarter". To hear him say that is very special. Now that we have a few more sessions under our belts, it is great to see that he continues to feel this way. His confidence and grades continue to grow. In fact, I met with his math teacher yesterday and she shared very nice compliments about his improvement, one of which being that he is now helping his classmates to understand some concepts. Progress Update: My prior review was written in December '12. Please know that my son's first quarter math grade jumped two letter grades when you tutored him (and he made the honor roll 1st Quarter). What's even better to report, is my son has maintained his high "B" average in math and has made the honor roll for the 2nd and 3rd Quarters as well (Hallelujah!). I am an adult learning Algebra for the first time. Before meeting with James I was having an extremely difficult time working problems, and understanding algebra concepts. James patiently explained each math problem to me, step by step. He reduced the more complicated math terms into simple, everyday language that helped me gain an understanding of how to apply specific formulas. He was also able to quickly pinpoint my strengths and weaknesses to determine where I was having difficulty. James also provided resources to further help my learning. My son is in the 8th grade. He needed a review of pre algebra concepts and study sessions for the Catholic Schools High School Placement Test (HPST). After the first two sessions in September, James advised that my son did not need a tutor but he would do the review sessions with him. My son has developed new math confidence and is really beginning to enjoy math. James challenges him with new concepts and is pushing him to begin some early SAT review. On March 1, my son was accepted to two schools. Equally as important, his current progress report in math reflects that he is on target to get an A in math this quarter. Mr. James was very patient with my son. He actually changed the attitude of Emmanuel to Algebra. He did not like both the teacher and the subject at school. Immediately we came in contact with Mr. James, he developed a positive attitude towards the subject.
Mr. James always works according to our schedule, as much as possible. He takes my son through the practical aspect of the subject and patiently explains how to solve word problems to him. He goes out of his ways to provide on-line practice exercises and goes through the answers dutifully.
He is a great Maths teacher, I think it is in his genes.
I have no hesitation in recommending him to other parents, especially, if their child has a challenge with the subject, he would turn it around. My son is very well at home with the subject now.

James began tutoring with my son in Algebra II very close to the end of his 2nd MP. James was able to bring up his grade by 2 levels in just 3 weeks’ time. My son had fallen behind in his assignments because he did not understand the work. James very patiently worked with him and was able to get him up to speed. James’ tutoring enabled my son to get an 85 on his mid-term exam when earlier my son had been failing most of his tests. James was very flexible with scheduling and able to give us extra time during those first few weeks. My son is now on task and James is helping him with his testing skills as well as his weekly work load. My son’s success in Algebra II is principally due to James’ hard work, diligence, and patience as a tutor. We owe James many thanks.

My 11th grader's confidence has significantly improved since receiving tutoring from James. My child has a challenging course load to include 2 AP courses and honors courses. Her grades in those subjects are amazing but when it came to Algebra 2....not so much. She hadn't been doing well on her Algebra tests and quizzes and as a result her grade was a D. Unfortunately we noticed her withdrawing and getting depressed. After only 2 sessions with James her last quiz in Algebra 2 was a 49/50!!! I have my joyful, amazing daughter back!! James has been working with my high school senior for almost six months now, and I think we will continue for the first half of the school year at my son's request. He earned an 88% in his Trigonometry class first quarter, a class that his first comment was "I don't have a clue what they are doing in that class". Additionally, his SAT score improved in Math, not by a significant amount but did improve by about 15 to 20 points. This is a great accomplishment, as I felt that sometimes James was putting forth more effort than my son with his encouragement and commitment and "tough love" statements when my son was not putting forth the effort that he should have been. My son has surprised us all and I know his success is hugely attributed to the support that he is receiving from the tutorial sessions with James. He will take the SAT again, and I am certain his score will continue to improve.

I first selected James B. when my child was failing geometry. There was a test she was to take in three days. James B. agreed to help me on very short notice. He went through the material with her and she got a 83 on the test. She did not understand how to work the problems before working with James B. His kind demeanor allows her to feel comfortable with him and I think this is how she is able to understand it when James B. tutors her more so than when her classroom teacher explains it. James B. has even given me websites for my child to practice on. I'm really relieved that I have someone knowledgeable, dependable, and very personable to help her. Generally teachers who are not compassionate and understanding my child doesn't seem to receive understanding from but she seems to be able understand her geometry work assignments since working with James B. Mr. James is a great tutor. If you need a patient person to work with and teach you or your child math/algebra then he fits the bill. After every session, I would ask my son if he felt like he was learning and if he understood what he was taught, the answer was "yes".
