I am a software developer with over 25 years of experience. Since 1999, I've taught intensive 3-5 day classes for professional computer programmers. I've taught various programming languages, most often Perl, Java, C, XML and scripting languages (JavaScript, VBScript, Korn Shell, Bash, etc.)

Now I've got a full-time programming job, but I'm available evenings to tutor.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

Over 15 years experience in C. Extensive experience with ANSI C, including all aspects of the development process. In addition, I've taught 5-day intensive courses in C for software professionals.

Linux

I have developed software in Unix and Linux environments for over 20 years. In addition, I have taught Linux commands and shell scripting to software professionals. I know Linux like my own backyard.

Perl

I have been programming in Perl for about 15 years. I've taught several dozen courses in Perl and developed my own courseware, which is very effective in my teaching of the language.

Perl is a great first programming language. It's easy to get started in, but incredibly powerful once you get into it. I can teach you everything you need to get started in the language, and give you the resources to learn more as you use it.

PHP

I started developing websites with PHP in 2009. The language is an outgrowth of Perl, so it was very easy to learn. I also develop websites with WordPress, which is written in PHP, and I write PHP to modify those sites.

The courseware I developed to tutor PHP is based on the courseware I developed to teach Perl.

UNIX

I have developed software in Unix environments for over 20 years. In addition, I have taught Unix commands and shell scripting to software professionals. I know Unix like my own backyard.

Unix commands and filesystem, Korn shell scripting, CSH scripting, Bash scripting, but NOT high-level Sysop skills.

This lesson was helpful. — Paul showed me how to code the formaction.php and form as well as how to get the data inputted into form to the MySQL dbase. This was a big help. I can now move forward with project. ...
