Hello. My name is Oren and I graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 2011. I am a National Merit Scholar Finalist. I completed three semesters at the University of Delaware and I took a semester off from school. I have transferred to Washington College for the Fall. I am a Computer Science major, although most of my expertise lies in mathematics. I have extensive experience tutoring my peers and younger students in a variety of subjects.
My philosophy for teaching is that it is insufficient for the student to merely memorize a formula; it is necessary to understand the formula's derivation as well as its potential applications. This leads to a much greater understanding of the subject material. Additionally, I believe that although mathematics is far easier than most people believe, its plethora of terminology and proliferation of formulae, as well as the unique way in which it is written, compounds its difficulty and confuses aspiring mathematicians. I make abstruse material accessible for the struggling student.
I also believe that math and computer science are two of the most creativity-dependent subjects. Certainly they cannot be thoroughly understood through rote memorization.
