I am fluent and skilled in American Sign Language and Deaf culture, as I am Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) and a skilled lip reader. My classes/sessions can be voiced, so there is no difficulty of clarity.
My sessions are creative, fun, exciting, and informative. One who typically participates in my sessions and/or classes learns more than 500- 750 signs within a 6-8 week period, Deaf education, and signing etiquette. Students also learn emergency signs and to learn how to sign their favorite song(s). At the end of the session students are able to generate basic conversation with the Deaf/HOH population with ease.
I have more than thirty (30) years of experience serving in the areas of Mental Health, Recreation Therapy, Crisis Management, Behavior Management, Individual, Group, & Family Therapy, Conflict Resolution, Alzheimer's Program Planning, Addiction Therapy services, American Sign Language and providing educational seminars/workshops related to Mental Health and Substance Abuse topics while working with persons of all ages, for both the hearing and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) communities.
My clinical experience supports me being very patient to work with all learners.
I am very familiar with the Deaf/HOH community, as I am a member of it, and I can offer additional information on special activities in the community that would offer the student practice time.
My experience working with children and youth include, American Sign Language Instruction of all ages, Camp Director of Summer Camp programs, individual and group therapy sessions, planning and designing birthday, holiday, and theme event activities, Behavior Management Planning, Staff & Development Training of teens, and persons providing services for youth, residential counseling, Gymboree, and ABA support services, just to name a few.
My past experience includes American Sign Language Interpreting Instruction focusing on Religious Studies and Sign as an Adjunct Professor for a local college, local and national churches, and at annual National Interpreting conferences for persons desiring to attain national Interpreting certification.
I have my own company so it allows me flexibility with my schedule. I have a passion for bridging the gap between the Deaf/HOH communities, teaching hearing toddlers ASL so they can learn how to communicate their needs at an early age, teaching persons having experienced a catastrophic illness or injury that has limited their verbal communication, and teaching Seniors who have lost their ability to communicate verbally.
Looking forward to working with you soon. I welcome all learners.
Happy Signing!
