I am a hydraulic/civil engineer by profession. For my undergraduate program, I was the recipient of the prize for an outstanding student. I have both classroom teaching and private tutoring experiences. Between 2002 and 2006, I was a lecturer at the Ethiopian Civil Service University and during that time I taught more than 12 different engineering courses for undergraduate urban engineering students. Between 2006 and 2011 I was a research assistant at the University of Wyoming and I used to cover my advisor’s graduate level classes from time to time. And, since August 2012 I have tutored math (from prealgebra to calculus II), chemistry and physics for mid- and high-school students here in the DC area. I have also tutored calculus, chemistry and physics for undergraduate civil engineering students from George Mason University and George Washington University.
I prefer to tailor my tutoring approach according to the demands of each student. However, for most students I focus on their weaknesses and problem solving skills while instilling confidence and positive thinking in parallel. Usually, I help them do as many problems as possible until they grasp the underlying concept very well. When needed, I use real-life examples or create my own problems on the side, which I feel would elaborate the academic concept being discussed better. And when discussing complex concepts, I start by using simple examples that the student understands easily.
I am very patient and persistent. As a former engineering student, I know that concepts in math and math related subjects build one over the other. Hence, I make sure a student understands a given material very well before moving on to the next. If I find that a student has missed a fundamental concept in the past, I go back and address it.
I also try my best so that I am very flexible in scheduling and meet student’s demands. So far for the last fourteen months, I have been very successful in one-on-one tutoring and have managed to pull many students out of F, D, and C grades and put them into the upper A group.
I look forward to hearing from you and tutoring with you.
Very Helpful! — Nibret is an excellent teacher and very friendly. My daughter meets with him twice a week for pre-calculus and she tells me he is very helpful and extremely patient. He always comes on time and gets right down to business. He will even stay extra time when necessary, to make sure my daughter thoroughly understands what they were working on that day. Since the school doesn't give enough homework, ...
