I am a certified private school teacher originally from Pennsylvania. I have seven years of experience working at an alternative school with at-risk teenage boys, of whom some had learning disabilities. Many were working towards completing their GED, and some were aiming for college. My wife and I moved to Baltimore in March 2013. Now I work part-time for Outward Bound, Baltimore Chesapeake Bay.

In 2012, I graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California with a Master’s degree in Theology. We spent last fall in the Chicago area, where my tutoring business took off. My best subjects are English, Writing, Grammar, Ecology, Botany, Geology, Environmental Sciences, World History, American History, and Basic Math. I am a firm believer in experiential education – people learn best not by memorization or lecture, but through their experiences.

ACT Reading

I am an excellent and voracious reader. I scored highly on the verbal/reading section of the SAT but have never actually taken the ACT (most colleges are actually more interested in SAT scores). In any event, the ACT can be an important measuring stick for your reading competency.

ADD/ADHD

In my former place of employment, I worked with ADD/ADHD students on a regular basis. I assisted them with all their school assignments as well as instructed them in a variety of subjects: high school math, science, history, English, reading, and geography. I was able to make learning fun and engaging for students for whom learning in a traditional (lecture-based) classroom was all too often not adapted to suit their needs. I do not have any special ADD/ADHD certifications, but I do have nearly 7 years of experience working with these types of students.

Algebra 1

I taught basic algebra (algebra 1, 2, 3) at a private school in Pennsylvania for nearly seven years. Math can be fun and, once you get the basic rules down, it all makes sense.

American History

In high school, I took Advanced Placement US History and loved it. I generally enjoy seeing how the past impacts where we are today. Also, I am always fascinated to learn about history from another perspective. One of the best history books I've ever read is "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn.

Autism

I have over six years of experience working as a state certified private school teacher and therapist at an alternative school in Pennsylvania called Outside In School of Experiential Education. On a daily basis I assisted teenage students with their assignments and daily life skills. Some of my former students had a variety of learning challenges - Autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, and various behavioral problems. I worked in conjunction with a social worker, and other therapeutic staff, to help the students reach the goals in their IEPs.

Bible Studies

I just finished a Master's degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena California. In order to obtain this degree I was required to take many classes in Biblical exegesis and hermeneutics. Additionally, I have much practical experience in actually facilitating group Bible studies.

Biology

I worked for nearly 7 years as a certified private school teacher and wilderness expedition leader in PA. Some of my favorite subjects were natural sciences like biology, ecology, and botany. I was able to utilize the outdoor environment as my classroom in many situations. For example: learning about marine biology while canoeing for 100 miles in the Florida Everglades makes the subject come alive.

Botany

I took a variety of environmental science classes while in college. One of my favorite classes was Botany. On top of all the technical plant physiology, we memorized over 37 different tree species and learned to identify them all by their leaves. That was fun and is my favorite Botany knowledge that I still use to this day.

Ecology

This is one of my favorite subjects. To see how the world's life all lives together is an amazing thing. I've seen may different ecosystems throughout the USA and would be able to help students understand textbook concepts on a very practical level.

Elementary (K-6th)

Although I taught teenagers for nearly seven years at a non-profit school in PA, some of them were really at an elementary level. I was able to assist many students with basic math, reading, writing, and science skills. Also, I was part of an after-school tutoring program in LA for over one year with my wife. We worked with many K-6th grade students. It was a lot of fun!

Elementary Math

During my years as a certified private school teacher in Pennsylvania, I helped many students improve their basic math skills.

English

I am a recent graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena California where I received a Master's Degree in Theology. During my college years, and particularly in seminary, I became proficient in English reading and writing. Even back in high school I won a school-wide essay writing competition. From 2004 to 2010 I was a certified private school teacher in PA where I helped teenagers become more competent with their reading and writing. In short, I consider myself an excellent user and teacher of the English language.

Football

I love football. In high school I lettered three years, helped our team get to the playoffs, was named MVP my senior year, was nominated to the county all-star team, and ended up getting a partial football scholarship to a DIII college.

GED

While working at a private nonprofit school in PA I helped many students study for their GED. I enjoy the challenge of the broad range of subjects that are required for the GED and I feel very confident in my ability to help others master this material.

Geography

I've traveled to nearly every state in the US and have an intimate understanding of North American geography. Spending significant amounts of time on wilderness expeditions has helped me learn by hands on experience. I am keenly interested in geological processes and how these have helped to shape the current political, religious, and physical landscape of our planet.

Reading

I am a recent graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena California where I received a Master's Degree in Theology. During my college years, and particularly in seminary, I became proficient in English reading and writing. Even back in high school I won a school-wide essay writing competition. From 2004 to 2010 I was a certified private school teacher in PA where I helped teenagers become more competent with their reading and writing. In short, I consider myself an excellent user and teacher of the English language.

Religion

I just graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena California with a Master of Arts degree in Theology and an Emphasis in Islamic Studies. Religions fascinate me and I know a good deal about the monotheistic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and some about Eastern religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism).

SAT Reading

I earned a high score on my SAT reading section. I am an avid reader and enjoy helping others learn new words, construct better sentences, and appreciate good quality writing.

Social Studies

I love Social Studies. I love learning about people and customs and cultures. I have a Theological Master's degree and have specialized in learning about Muslim people and the religion of Islam. Even back in high school I was able to win a school wide Social Studies Quiz competition. I stay well read on domestic and international politics, global and religious conflicts, and the movement and settlement of a variety of people groups. Of late I have been reading and researching the dynamics of the migration of Anabaptist people who fled Europe in the 16th Century and have since settled in various parts of the world; South America, Russia, Canada, and my own home town - Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

Special Needs

I have over six years of experience working as a state certified private school teacher and therapist at an alternative school in Pennsylvania called Outside In School of Experiential Education. On a daily basis I assisted teenage students with their assignments and daily life skills. Some of my former students had a variety of learning challenges - Autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, and various behavioral problems.

Study Skills

I have a variety of study skills. I am a great test taker and have lots of tricks for memorizing and learning the appropriate information. Some of my study techniques include making flashcards, timelines, and outlines. I also find study groups and tutors helpful for people who tend to process their learning verbally or simply want to talk with someone about what they're learning. My study and organizational skills allowed me to maintain a 3.6 GPA for my BA and a 3.7 GPA for my MA.

Vocabulary

I love learning new words and trying to find creative ways to use them in sentences. Many English words have their roots in Latin. Understanding some basic roots can go a long way in covering many different vocab words.

Writing

I consider myself an excellent writer. In high school I won a school-wide AP English essay competition. Throughout college and graduate school I wrote hundreds of pages of good (grade A) quality papers. Although I have never tried to get any of my work published, I do not consider it out of reach someday. I'm not the best proof-reader but I'm really good at finding words to express my feelings, constructing persuasive sentences, and logically connecting my ideas from one paragraph to the next.
