As a prospective educator, my passions lie within the students. I have been studying education for almost 4 years now, and my areas of expertise are in reading, comprehension, grammar, and writing. I have studied extensive works of literature and am well versed at interpreting texts from a vast array of different authors. I am also qualified to tutor in several other subjects that involve test preparation, and study skills! Though my focus is in English, I am perfectly willing and capable to teach other things. It is a joy for me to help the students crack open their knowledge base through breaking down terms, reading passages, and essays. I also enjoy decoding word problems in math and science, and teach organization and study skills. I am excited to contribute time and energy into the academic potential of someone ready and willing to learn and improve their own skills. Please take a moment to look over my profile, and if you are interested, feel free to contact me so that we may further proceed! Thank you!

I played softball from the ages of 11-23. I have played on all levels from slow to fast pitch all the way up into college. My primary position was catcher, but I have also played 3rd base, short stop, and first base. I have been taught to break down the sport to others and coach them into playing at the highest level possible.

I was a volleyball player from 11-19 years old. I was the captain of my varsity team and am familiar with the basic bumping, setting and striking techniques.

ADD/ADHD

I have taken coursework on Educating students with ADD/ADHD, and I understand how to engage them on a more consistent basis. My own brother has been diagnosed with ADHD as well as a learning disability. I have spent time in a formal classroom setting helping in instructional engagement for students with these issues.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am familiar with curriculums from several grade levels.

Mathematics and language arts are my strong points. I work with several different tools in order to break the mold of traditional learning, so that information may be absorbed in a way that was not originally tried, or intended.

Ex:

Graphing in Mathematics

Give a child a bag of M&Ms, or assorted peices of fruited, and have them tally how many of each respective fruit they have. We can then plot then on a bar graph. This exposes the child to the material without being overly technical, or intimidating.

Reading:

Give children small samples of texts. Allow them to read aloud, stopping frequently if it looks like there is a struggle. Discuss the text, maybe find a supplemental video.

Grammar

I am a stickler for grammar. I find that it is the most important part of writing, and speaking in a professional way.

Praxis

I am currently two semesters away from being certified to teach in the state of Maryland. I have taken and passed both praxis tests. The first is a general test of knowledge, the second one I took is in pedagogy and content area. My content is English Literature. I passed both with good scores.

Public Speaking

I am studying to become a teacher and I have a lot of experience speaking in front of groups of 30 or more people. I have taken a public speaking course, and am very fluid with effectively engaging an audience and conveying my idea in a way that keeps attention. I have also coached students in presentations that they were assigned for projects.

Softball

I was trained to really appreciate the basics of softball.

Fielding grounders, proper throwing technique, batting stances, and how to catch a pop fly.

I caught for an all American Pitcher, who was throwing 60 MPH fastballs at the age of 12.

I drill the basics before getting into any type of positioning, because the basics get any player where they need to be in a game.

Ex:

Grounder drill:

I would roll grounders to the player, and have them field them, keeping the glove low to the ground, and bring the ball into the stomach with both hands as she begins to prepare her throw. Repeat several times, then move to throwing.

Study Skills

I have worked on mastering study skills both as a student, and a teacher. It was one of the reasons that I became a teacher in the first place, because I believed that there was little to no emphasis on study skills within the schools today.
