I have a masters degree in science education. I have taught all ages, but I particularly enjoy helping young people overcome their fear of math and be comfortable working with math and science. While I have 20 years experience teaching, I work best in small groups and one on one.

I am a rated chess player and I use games art and real life situation to improve understanding. I have also taught classes in ACT test preparation in the areas of algebra, chemistry, biology, geometry, pre-calculus, and general science.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is the study of Patterns. It is a way of describing patterns using words, symbols and pictures (graphs).

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 covers quadratic equations, graphing, complex numbers, functions, sequences and series, and exponents and logarithms. Problem solving skills are emphasized throughout.(From the "Art of Problem Solving") This is the course that is most relevant to the SAT and ACT exams. Here, you have to apply your knowledge of Arithmetic, Geometry and Algebra 1 to practical and theoretical problems. When working with students I share with them "What I am THINKING about when I am solving a problem. What to do when you get stumped by a problem. And how to apply and build upon prior math skills in order to acquire new skills".

Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter, its composition, properties and methods of producing change.

Elementary (K-6th)

I began my teaching career (20+) twenty plus years ago as a substitute teacher of mathematics and science. I learned from a master teacher that aside from possessing tremendous patience, a teacher also needs to encourage and stimulate the young child's mind to love learning and be inquisitive. My teaching approach is designed to allow children to have fun as well as provide opportunities for cognitive development. I use manipulatives such as cuisinaire and algebra tiles as well as calculators and coloring pencils to build from concrete to abstract comprehension of a concept. Sometimes I resort to singing and story telling to keep the child's attention and get my point across. (What's wrong with play?) Elementary learning is about "Beginning with the End in Mind!"

Elementary Math

I have helped children in elementary school prepare for middle school and more specifically Early algebra.

Geometry

More than any other branch of mathematics, Geometry deals with logic and reasoning and its application in problem solving.

SAT Math

What is the SAT? What are my strengths, and weaknesses? What is my learning style and how can it be used to raise my scores on the SAT? How can a Tutor help me where a book or computer program can't? These are the questions you need to ask you need to ask yourself and a potential tutor? I am the teacher asked by my colleagues and school principals to prepare students for the SAT and ACT because I KNOW HOW TO TAKE AND SCORE HIGH ON ANY TEST! There are some basic techniques and skills I can teach you in preparing for any test. The methods I teach will place you within one standard deviation of the mean test scores for Maryland students and improve your test results by at least one standard deviation from you previous score.
