I have over 15 years of experience with Mandarin Chinese, and I have worked in various capacities as a language tutor or teacher over the years. I currently teach 5th grade Chinese at an independent school in Bethesda in addition to operating a small linguistic services company.
My love of Chinese extends far beyond the language itself, and I believe that to truly become proficient in the Chinese language one must also study Chinese culture. Therefore I teach my students many of the subtle cultural nuances that separate a native speaker from someone who has simply memorized vocabulary lists and set phrases. I look forward to helping each of my students achieve fluency in Mandarin and a deep appreciation for Chinese culture.
I also work as an elementary school assistant special education teacher, and I am experienced in teaching general subject matter at the elementary school level.
I began studying Mandarin 15 years ago as a fifth grade student at the Landon School in Bethesda, MD. In 2006 I moved to Beijing to study Mandarin at Qinghua University. Since returning to the United States I have taken over 40 credit hours of courses covering Chinese language, literature, culture, and film at the University of Oregon and St. Mary's College of Maryland. In addition, I served as a teaching assistant for college level Chinese courses while at St. Mary's College.
I currently teach 5th grade Chinese at the Landon School and work with numerous students privately from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore. I also work as a translator and freelance interpreter.
I have seven years of experience tutoring elementary aged students in Chinese. During that time I also taught English to elementary school students abroad. I am very comfortable working with students in that age range. I have also spent the last two years working as a Chinese teacher for elementary school students at a private boys' school in the DC area and as an assistant special education teacher at an elementary school in Annapolis.
I hold degrees in Economics and Chinese, and I currently teach Chinese and work as an assistant special education teacher in Annapolis. I am familiar with the current common core education standards and proficient in instructing the core subjects of reading, math and spelling at an elementary school level.
Knowledgeable and Confident — Quentin is very knowledgeable and patient with my daughter. She felt she learned a lot and was very impressed with the way he spoke Chinese. He reviewed her assignments, asked her questions and help guide her. Very good session! ...
