Hi, my name is Ruby and I am in my mid 20's. I have a degree in Psychology from University of California, San Diego. I was an honor student in college, high school and I was in the top 10% of my high school graduating class. I attended AP and honors classes, and I was always praised for being a hard working student as far back as elementary school. I was not always good at English writing, comprehension and vocabulary but with work and determination, I improved. I was required to take a remedial writing class during my first quarter at UCSD and I was given three chances to pass the class and the exam or else I would have had to no longer attend the school. Luckily for me, after all the hard work, I was able to pass both the class and the exam after only the first quarter. Although I did well in school, there were times where I struggled, which is why I am patient and can sympathize with students looking for some help.

I was first introduced to tutoring during my senior year of high school. I had one free class period twice a week which I spent helping my former chemistry teacher as a teacher aid. I assisted with grading and answering students' questions. This was not a paid tutoring job but this was when I realized that I like to tutor.

I have experience as an in person and online tutor and have tutored students from grade 6 to grade 12, but would love to tutor up to college level soon. I mostly tutor math but I have also helped my students with their homework in other subjects. I have experience tutoring elementary math, elementary writing, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and SAT test preparation. I have worked with students who were not motivated to learn to those who were. I understand sometimes students are not motivated or feel discouraged. I try to make the experience as fun and stress free as possible. I try to engage the students during tutoring sessions, not just give answers, but help them understand the mental process or steps to get to the answers.

I can help students cope with testing anxiety since I had to deal with it myself. I felt a lot of anxiety during English comprehension and writing tests, especially on standardized tests. I learned tips to help control my anxiety throughout college, which I share with my students.

I love math subjects such as Pre Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Probability and Statistics. Math is my strongest subject and it always seemed fairly easy for me to get A's on my tests and quizzes. I am great at explaining the steps needed and have great techniques to help remember how to solve problems. I love to help students feel more comfortable with the subject.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Prealgebra

I received A's on tests and quizzes in Pre Algebra. Pre Algebra is useful in the real world, which young students may not realize yet. I try to use real life examples that pertain to their lives to help them understand the material.

Study Skills

I have a BA in Psychology that has given me tools to help students organize and learn material. I have tutored students with ADHD and have learned what has worked for them and have been able to apply these tips and techniques to other students. I go over note taking, stress management, time management, organizational skills, study environment and learning styles with the students who want help with their study skills. Throughout college, I was able to avoid studying all night for a test because I had great organizational and study skills.

Very Professional and Patient — Ruby was excellent with conversing and assisting my daughter. Although my daughter was slightly hesitant meeting someone new, Ruby was able to make her feel at ease. Ruby allowed my daughter to lead the session by giving feedback on what she was working on. As well, Ruby's schedule was flexible enough to accommodate our schedules. I'll continue to utilize her tutoring services. I highly recommend ...
