English, Reading, and Writing tutor for middle and high school!

Hi everyone!

My name is Samantha and I may be the ideal tutor for you!

In 2011 I graduate from Syracuse University with a Bachelor's degree in English Education (I majored in English and Secondary Education. I also minored in American History). During my time there I worked as a Literacy tutor for one semester and worked as a tutor for the university's NCAA athletes for a year. I also did two student teaching placements. One in a 9th grade English classroom and on in a 7th grade English classroom.

I currently work as a 7th and 8th grade Reading teacher at a local middle school. My curriculum focuses strongly on reading strategies such as vocabulary, summarizing, predicting, inferring, and making connections. I have also been a part of two study groups; one which developed the new Reading curriculum we are now implementing, and the other developing a formative assessment which we are also implementing this school year.

I favor a hands-on and interactive approach that involves a lot of interaction between the tutor and student. However my specific methods will vary depending on the subject and learning style of the student.

American History

I have a minor in American History from Syracuse University. I also have experience teaching a Social Studies based Reading curriculum, which gave me a broader view of History and Geography.

Vocabulary

As a Reading teacher, and with my background and certification in English Education I have a lot of experience with vocabulary. Whether it is learning content area appropriate vocabulary, using context clues to learn new words, or just building up a student's vocabulary I have acquired many strategies that can help a student succeed in this area.

Grammar

I am a certified English teacher. I also incorporate grammar instruction into the Reading curriculum that I am currently teaching.

Reading

I am currently a middle school Reading teacher. I have been in this position for almost two years. During my time in this position I have developed a new Reading curriculum, as well as a Formative Assessment that can be used to collect data on the progress students make in the development on essential Reading skills.

Writing

As a certified English teacher and two years of experience as a Reading teacher I have had a chance to help students develop their writing in many different ways. Whether it is narrative, poetry, persuasive, or essay writing, I have developed strategies to help students succeed.

English

I am a certified English teacher. I also have a degree in English and Secondary Education from Syracuse University. I am currently in the process of receiving my masters in English from Salem State University.

Literature

I am a certified English teacher and am currently teaching middle school Reading. These experiences have helped me to become familiar with a variety of young adult literature.

Proofreading

My experience as a Reading teacher for two years, as well as my background and certification in English Education has given me a lot of experience with proofreading skills.

Study Skills

I am able to help students develop study skills by teaching them strategies that they can use to improve their own learning. In the past I have helped students develop note taking systems that are appropriate to their specific needs, as well as taught them a variety of study strategies.
