Bonnie’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You
can read more about
Bonnie’s qualifications in specific subjects below.
American History
Whether you wish to learn more about our Founding Fathers, or find out about the history of the United States Space Program, this course is for you.
I have had the opportunity to tutor many students in American History, and believe that I am well qualified to teach it to others.
We can use your text book or mine to locate just the right stuff to help you achieve historical success!
Drawing
I love Art, and would be delighted to work with students K - 7 to explore drawing, with use of varied media, such as pencil, watercolor and pastels.
I have a text that I really like, or we could use yours.
I will request that you have the materials for each lesson on hand as well as a surface for us to use for class.
It will be fun!
Elementary (K-6th)
I request certification in all elementary subjects [K - 6th] as I have taught all the required subjects to my 13 year old granddaughter, home schooled by me since grade 3.
She was born in Costa Rica in 1998, and attended school there through Grade 2; however, I taught her all of the Elementary subjects in English as we planned to return to the United states to live.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from Empire State college and a Masters Degree in Health Services administration from the New School for Social Research.
I have taught courses for Empire State college and the New school, and am bilingual in Spanish.
Elementary Science
Need a little help studying for that big Science test, or are you looking for a cool experiment?
Well, get out your safety goggles, and let's get on it!
I will customize Science studies to fit the child's grade level, and need for knowledge.
Power up!
English
Want to study hard for that Spelling Bee, or would you like to get a head start on your paper due next week?
English and Language Arts don't have to be boring.
And learning vocabulary can be fun! Really! Do you know the meaning of "leukocystic"? It's a cool word with an even cooler meaning.
Not to worry: we'll fit your study sessions to meet your needs. So, give me a call and we can figure it out together.
ESL/ESOL
I have taught English as a second language to members of the community in Amsterdam, New York, as well as to children and adults in Costa Rica, where I lived for 10 years.
Geography
"Oh, the places you"ll go...." The most awesome way to learn about geography is by going there, but if traveling to Sri Lanka doesn't fit in with your vacation plans, we can visit locations around the globe from the living room.
I have taught geography to my 13 year old granddaughter, who is homeschooled, and I have tutored other children from K - 9 in the subject as well.
I have lived in many states, and several foreign countries, besides traveling extensively.
It's fascinating to learn about other states and countries, so that when you do have the opportunity to visit them, you"ll know exactly where you are on planet Earth.
If you think that you might like to travel through books and the Internet, please call.
Grammar
"I before E, except after C"..... Oh, those rules of grammar and punctuation can seem tricky and tiresome.
But wait! We can do it together. It's really not so-o-o-o bad!
I have taught grammar to students in grades K - 9, and currently homeschool my 13 year old granddaughter in the subject.
Using your text or mine, we can figure out where to place commas, and how not to use "don't".
For example, you've heard that if someone says, "I don't want no cookies," it means that he/she really does want cookies. Right? That's because using "don't....no" creates a double negative, or a "Give me cookies, please!" sentence.
So I"ll be looking for you! [And the cookies!]
Literature
I love to read and write and read some more! So I know firsthand that Literature does not simply mean a dusty old book, but does offer us views of amazing people, places and times.
Many of the experiences we encounter in Literature may be very different from the ones which we know from everyday life, but that's a very good thing.
Our horizons will be broadened as a result.
If you'd like some assistance in your journey, please contact me.
Painting
Painting means many things to different people.
From painting a mural on a wall to painting a miniature ship to fit inside a small bottle, anything goes!
I work with grades K - 7 on exploring colors, shading, perspective and all sorts of devices to enhance their work.
I prefer to work with watercolors or acrylics, and we may begin with colored pencils or markers.
The class work will be designed to meet the needs of the individual child.
Pick up your brushes!
Reading
"Reading is FUN-damental", as the saying goes.
Sometimes it seems as if it is going to take forever to get to the "FUN" part.
I know that learning to read, and becoming proficient at it, can be very challenging!
Reading is the building block upon which all other learning is based, making it a critical skill upon which future academic success depends.
I would be happy to try to put the "FUN" into reading at the grade level that meets each student's needs.
Social Studies
I have taught Social studies to my 13 year old granddaughter whom I have home schooled since Grade 3.
In addition, I read on my own because I very much enjoy the subject matter. I also keep up with current events.
Spanish
Bueno.... I developed a love for Spanish at age 15 when I spent the summer in Ecuador as an exchange student.
My host family spoke no English, so i had to learn fast! It was definitely a challenge for me, so I know that learning another language is not as easy as 1, 2, 3!
But it can be fascinating to learn to communicate in a second language, and I have taught all levels of Spanish to all ages.
Entonces... Te espero! [So, I'm waiting for you!]
Spelling
Okay, I know! Spelling is not everybody's cup of tea, but I happen to be one of those people who loves it. Weird, huh?
I can work on it with you , if you wish.
Whether it's a weekly spelling test, or a Spelling Bee that's coming up, I would love to work with you on your A B C's!
Just C-A-L-L me.
Study Skills
I became a Certified Court Interpreter for the New York State Court System. I have been able to assist students to improve his/her understanding and grasp of Study Skills.
As he/she uses these tools, he/she will gain confidence and, over time, will feel more secure in the knowledge that he/she has made progress.
Upon reaching his/her goals, the student will bask in the satisfaction of a job well done!
TOEFL
This exam is designed to assess proficiency in the English language and I would be honored to assist students in achieving their goals.
Vocabulary
What can I say about vocabulary? It is one of my favorite subjects because I am able to learn the names of exotic animals, plants and all other kinds of strange stuff just by finding out what a new word means.
As a matter of fact, I just read "Hunger Games": it is very cool how the author made up words to use in her fantastic stories.
So, don't ever be afraid of new words. You can always unlock their meanings with a few clicks of a mouse!
[And I can help you, if you like.]
Writing
Mastering the art of writing is key, not only to academic success, but to a student's successful adult life.
Being able to write well will ensure that a student gets into college, if that is his/her goal, and will definitely get the student through all his/her assigned workload.
I enjoy writing, and can assist the student to learn to write well, even if writing is not at the top of his/her list of favorites.
So, please let me know if I can be of service.
