MIT (Mechanical Engineer)
- About Me -
I graduated from MIT in 2011 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. I grew up in Woburn and I currently work in Lexington as a mechanical engineer doing research and development for the government. I live in the Davis Sq. area in Cambridge so I am quite comfortable traveling to surrounding cities and towns near Cambridge, Lexington, and Woburn.
- My Experience -
I have been an active tutor to my peers since my junior year of high school and have since gone on to tutor many high school students (boys and girls) from grades 9-12. I especially enjoy teaching math and science, and have extensive experience in tutoring physics (mechanics and E&M), algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. I am also an SAT I/II tutor and can offer mentorship services for the college application process. I interview prospective students for MIT and have a strong sense of what top universities are looking for in their applicants.
At the college level, I have tutored physics to students of Boston area colleges, including MIT and BU. I was also an undergraduate teaching assistant for the classical mechanics physics class while I myself was a student at MIT.
- Tutoring Style and Philosophy -
My initial sessions usually begin by going over assignments and tests with the student to identify his/her specific challenges with the subject matter. Typical problems students struggle with include weak fundamentals, concept misinterpretations, and difficulty applying learned fundamentals and concepts to solving problems. Once I have determine the student's weakness(es), I will come up with examples to illustrate different ways to approach the problem or think about the idea. I strive to explain and illustrate the concepts they are being taught, why they are significant in the real world, and how they can be applied. I believe understanding the concepts in the context of real life applications allow for true understanding of the subject matter. I’ve found that many students may be able to “get by” in school just through pattern matching and learning definitions, but without fully understanding the fundamental ideas. However, these lapses in comprehension are generally exposed when the student is asked to apply concepts to answer questions phrased in ways they have never seen. I believe in teaching beyond the given subject matter: I want my students to learn to think in a deeper and more proactive way, improving their problem solving skills and giving them the confidence to approach and tackle any type of problem. - About Me -

Part Two (updated as of 8 January 2012 session) -
For both physics & geometry (grade 9): Jacky helps to make good connections to promote better understanding of concepts & drills (homework or other exercises).
Some days our student is less than fully-engaged or not quite 'with it'; yet Jacky keeps a positive energy with patience to help work through to better insight.
His approach also helps give more confidence so our student feels more capable of learning & solving problems with her own initiative.
A good healthy balance is achieved.
Part One - We have had Jacky in tutoring sessions for high school (grade 9) Physics & Geometry with several sessions.
Based on our observations & direct experience to date:
- he provides excellent instruction, explanation & support;
- he demonstrates illustrations & basic concepts well;
- his style is steady & patient, yet lively enough to keep it interesting & engaging;
- he shows discipline & the value of sustained concentration without a break (sessions are 90 minute to 2 hours straight),
which sets a fine example for the student;
- he seems to have a good insight as to what method of support will work best with the student;
- he has been punctual & also flexible (adjusting to our requests for changed times).
Overall he is top level across the board; excellent.
Jacky helped me go from a certain failing great to a top grade in the class. He helped me improve my poor math skills, lack of physics background and helped with me with many test taking strategies.
Jacky was able to spend a tremendous amount of time with me in person and through email as well.
I would definitely use him again!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been tutoring physics for over seven years. I started tutoring honors physics during my junior year of high school while I was still taking the class. I did the same while taking AP calculus. Later on while I was attending MIT, I've tutored high school honors physics, AP physics, and college physics. During my senior year of MIT, I was also served as a physics teaching assistant and grader at MIT. Although I tutor many other subjects (mostly in standardized tests, other sciences, and math courses), I can truly say I have the most passion for physics and enjoy tutoring this subject matter the most.
Jacky L. passed a background check on 10/8/13. The check was ordered by another user through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Jacky, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
