I am an undergraduate at Williams College. My multiple experiences tutoring high school students at varied academic levels have allowed me to develop strategies for teaching that are specific to each student. I also have over 50 hours of experience doing professional, one-on-one tutoring. I try to provide not only help with the subject in question, but ways to approach problems in all subjects so that students can reach the answers themselves.

I scored a 2280 on the SAT and was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. I also received a perfect score on the English SAT II. Much of my tutoring skill comes from my work with a highly skilled standardized test tutor who shared helpful test taking strategies with me. I have also been a writing tutor for three years and have worked as an assistant teacher in an environmental community center helping to teach the students about the local ecology. Finally, I have been a professional tutor for over a year, accumulating more 50 hours of experience and having much success with all of my students in a number of different subjects.

During my sessions I try to create a relaxed and lighthearted environment in order to make the process as pleasant as possible. I am an enthusiastic and dedicated person who is always looking to excel. I love working with students and helping them achieve their goals.

I have references available if requested.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is often the point in school when students begin to struggle in math. It is the point where more thorough understanding of the material is necessary in order see how to solve the problem. While many students learn in different ways, teachers do not always have time to explain the material in a way that is clear to every student. To address this issue, my favorite approach is to simply come up with different ways to view the problems. Although it is not all the same subjects, my 740 on the math section of the SAT indicates a thorough understanding of the subject material. Additionally my student reviews show that I have had a lot of success teaching algebra, and I love opportunities to continue to do so.

Algebra 2

Algebra is often the point in school when students begin to struggle in math. It is the point where more thorough understanding of the material is necessary in order see how to solve the problem. While many students learn in different ways, teachers do not always have time to explain the material in a way that is clear to every student. To address this issue, my favorite approach is to simply come up with different ways to view the problems. Biology

Biology is probably my first love in academics. I was one of only 3 freshman in my class of 550 to place out of the Williams College Bio 101 course, which is roughly a more in depth equivalent of AP Bio. I also have a lot of experience tutoring and teaching biology. I have worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences for 6 years educating our visitors about zoology and ecology. I also spent the summer after my senior year of high school as an assistant teacher in an environmental community center. While there I taught high school students about various aspects of the local biology. I have a passion for the subject that I greatly enjoy sharing with my students.

Bodybuilding

I have worked with more than 10 trainers and coaches throughout my 8 years of wrestling, always focusing in the off-season on maximum strength and muscle gaining. On average since my freshman year of high school I have increased my body weight by about 15-20 lbs. every year while only having grown about 3 in. in height since then. The body fat tests that I am required to take for wrestling have confirmed that each year more than 10 of these pounds are not fat. I believe that my bodybuilding methods would greatly benefit others who are looking for similar results.

Chemistry

How is it that we can mix hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide and end up with salt water? Why do metals rust? Chemistry is a fascinating subject that can explain many of the amazing phenomena that we see every day. As tedious as the subject may seem to some, I try to make chemistry interesting by continuously relating back to the bigger picture. What does this simple reaction mean in the world? How can the principles being shown here be applied to the rest of the world. My goal is to have all of my students leave with, if not a love, then at least an appreciation of chemistry.

COOP/HSPT

I am quite well versed in standardized test taking, scoring in the 99th percentile on both the PSAT and SAT. I not only know the material that is presented on the HSPT, but also tricks and strategies to help any student improve their test-taking ability. I am especially skilled in English, earning a perfect score on the English SAT II. However, I am also a very capable math tutor, scoring a 720 on the Math 2 SAT II. I love opportunities to share my skills with students and look forward to working on the HSPT.

Economics

Economics is one of my favorite school subjects. In my opinion it is a class that should be taken by everyone. It is one of the most relevant subjects to our world today and is arguably also the most commonly misunderstood. Economics is not only a bunch of cause and effect scenarios but is also a way of thinking. The ability to work through a complex series of events is an incredibly difficult but also an incredibly important skill to have. Helping students to understand this as well as how cool and exciting economics can be is a major goal of mine when teaching it. If it is not already clear, I am very excited to teach this subject

English

I have lots of experience and expertise teaching English. I was a writing tutor for two years in high school and one year in college, helping students with both college essays and general school assignments. I also scored a near perfect score on the SAT writing section and a perfect score on the English SAT II. I love exploring English with students and I try to teach them to enjoy the nuances of the language. Whether it be a 5th grader, an 11th grader, or an adult, I try to make learning English a fun and interesting experience.

Fitness

Because of my extensive experience during my 8 year wrestling career I have much experience in fitness training. I have worked with more than 10 trainers and coaches on all aspects of training including muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and diet/nutrition. My consistent need to improve in all of these areas makes me a very qualified fitness instructor.

Martial Arts

I have been wrestling for 8 years and am currently wrestling for Williams College. During my high school career I was captain of my high school team junior and senior year, I placed 8th at PA Prep States, I was 2x All-League HM and All-Main Line HM, and I qualified for MAWA regionals and eastern nationals. I also have some experience in kickboxing and Brazilian Jujitsu.

Reading

Critical reading is one of my specialties. In addition to scoring in the 99th percentile on the SAT reading section, I also received a perfect score on the English SAT II. My strengths come not only from my reading comprehension but also from my ability to recognize for what type of answer the test is looking. Whether it's using key words and format analysis to garner meaning or comparing the purposes of sentences, I have many strategies for helping students improve their critical reading skills. I love opportunities to share my tactics with students.

SAT Math

The math section of the SAT is a struggle for many people. Those who have had difficulty with algebra, geometry and/or trigonometry will often have trouble answering these types of questions in an official setting. It is for this reason that I make sure to address both the anxiety related and the knowledge based issues that students may have. Additionally, I like to teach test taking strategies that many people do not realize can be applied to the math section. My qualifications include a 740 on the math section of the SAT and a 720 on the math II SAT II. I have also had much success helping students to improve their scores in all sections of the test.

SAT Reading

SAT reading is one of my specialties. In addition to scoring a 750 on the SAT reading section, I also received a perfect score on the English SAT II. My strengths come not only from my reading comprehension but also from my ability to recognize what type of answer the test is looking for. I love opportunities to share my strategies with students.

SAT Writing

The writing section of the SAT is undoubtedly my best. I received a nearly perfect score on the this section and a perfect score on the English SAT II. However, my experience with writing extends beyond standardized testing. I was a writing tutor for two years in high school and one year in college, helping students with both college essays and general school assignments. I have also had an editorial published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. My writing ability comes not only from my comprehension of grammatical rules and structural expectations, but also from my understanding of many writing nuances. Having a journalist and speech writer for a mother, I learned from an early age which structural formulas work well and how to identify things that simply didn't sound right. Teaching students the sames skills has been a very enjoyable experience in the past and one that I look forward to continuing.

Study Skills

I have been an accomplished student since high school where I was inducted into the Cum Laude Society at graduation. I was accepted into the prestigious Williams College where after my first semester I was placed on the Dean's List. I handle my often heavy workload through efficient and consistent time management and planning. The year round training that comes with being a varsity wrestler makes it even more important that I use my time well. I would love the opportunity to help other kids learn some of the skills that have gotten me where I am today and that will help me in the future.

Writing

Writing is probably the subject that I have the most experience tutoring. I was a writing tutor for two years in high school and one year in college, helping students with both college essays and general school assignments. I also scored a near perfect score on the SAT writing section, and received a perfect score on the English SAT II. I have also had an op-ed published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. My writing ability comes not only from my comprehension of grammatical rules and structural expectations, but also from my understanding of many writing nuances. Having a journalist and speech writer for a mother, I learned from an early age which structural formulae worked well, and how to identify things that simply didn't sound right. Teaching students the sames skills has been a very enjoyable experience in the past, and one that I look forward to continuing.
