I have two bachelor's degrees - one in math and one in molecular genetics. I also have a master's degree in molecular genetics. I have a lot of experience working with younger students, particularly special needs students, so I understand how to explain things when they are difficult to understand. I have also worked as a private tutor for college level biology and chemistry courses and occasionally for math courses.

When I was younger and learning math and science, I struggled with the subjects greatly. I always needed more time to learn something than other students. Because of this, I developed ways to think about material that is unique and makes it easier to comprehend. I don't believe math or the sciences are truly out of anyone's reach. All it takes is a new way to look at the subject. I'm really passionate about these subjects, and I look forward to hearing from you and to the opportunity to help you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

Before attending college, I attended a private art school after regular school, where I learned how to draw, paint, and use many other forms of media. There I learned basics of drawing through shapes and shading, as well as how to use different drawing media like pencils, pens, and pastels. Additionally, from the ages of 12 until 18 I worked at this school as a teaching assistant, where I would help students one on one, assist the teacher in preparations for class, and occasionally substitute or teach my own class. After I began attending college, I held private art lessons for 6-8 students and occasionally for one student at a time.

Genetics

I have a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Genetics, which included studies ranging from basic mendelian genetics to complex ideas of gene expression and regulation. I also have a Master's degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, during which I reviewed and furthered my studies in this area. I have worked on research within genetics and written summaries and explanations of my research, beginning with the basic genetic background behind the ideas for general, in addition to scientific audiences, and I have presented such research summaries in front of general audiences at poster presentations. I have also tutored non-biology majors taking their first intro-biology course, which contained a good deal of basic genetics, similar to what a high school student might learn.

Painting

Before attending college, I attended a private art school after regular school, where I learned how to draw, paint, and use many other forms of media. There I learned basics of color theory, and how to paint well in acrylic, oil, tempera, and water color paints.

Hardworking and professional — Mariya tutored our son for the SAT subject test in biology and the AP biology exam. She was always prepared for sessions, spending a great deal of her own time preparing for the meetings. I was a bit skeptical that a tutor might try to try to justify extra time, but that was never the case. If the test of a good tutor is the student's achievements, then Mariya is the best. A perfect score of 800 ...
