Dear Students & Families,
I am an experienced wordsmith who has been writing and teaching the basic elements of good writing, language, and grammar for many years. I have taught professionals how to write effective business letters, and I've taught staff how to comport themselves when answering business phone calls. I've also taught physicians how best to present their clinical information to the general public.
When it comes to students improving their language/reading/writing skills, I take a positive approach. I engage in lots of two-way dialogue with students and enhance that learning through reading. All along the way, however, my goal is to keep the lessons upbeat, nonjudgmental, and contemporary. Thus, I am able to engage students of all ages right at the point that they are entering the learning environment.
I also believe that there is room for humor in education, and that students learn best when they are able to be relaxed. I also believe in the power of writing as an early step in gaining fluency. The written document, in my teaching, then becomes the centerpiece from which I engage students in discussion of language and even pronunciation, if required. Another hallmark of my teaching is my sincere attempts at cultural appreciation. Thus, I often encourage the student to enter into learning from their own cultural sphere, and we use that to transition into more specific Engligh language learning and fluency. Writing and reading are skills that are honed through practice and in that, it is rather like learning an instrument. Learning is just the beginning. Then comes the practice. At the end of the day, the true reward for the student is mastery, and that is my whole goal.
I have a B.A. in Journalism and Fine Arts from Syracuse University as well as a Master's in Journalism, also from Syracuse University. While working in healthcare, I taught a large team of MDs and nurses how to improve their communications skills, both in writing as well as in general oral communications. The team of 20+ people had encountered lots of misunderstandings and needed an expert (me), to help them sort out their stumbling blocks and overcome them. I also taught staff who were responsible for answering the main phone and providing customer service how better to present themselves in communicating on the phone, in person, and through writing business letters. I've also coached CEOs who are facing crises in their companies. They have come to me for one-on-one coaching in how to talk to the press, how to communicate clearly and succinctly, and how to manage in a crisis environment. Throughout my career I have provided one-on-one private counseling and teaching to adults and young adults around writing application letters, creating resumes, and seeking employment. I also provide one-on-one coaching and teaching to help people gain a more complete and accurate presence on LinkedIn. By helping them write short, focused biographical information, they have developed a stronger and a more dynamic online presence. I also currently have a couple of clients who I am helping around life coaching and skills identification with an eye towards helping them find employment.
