I have two professional passions: teaching and biology. I love helping students learn and work to make sure each of my students not only recites content but also understand the concepts that are being taught.
I have taught high school and college aged students biology over the past 12 years as I earned a B.S. and a Ph.D. in biology. In addition to working one-on-one with students as a teaching assistant in graduate school, I have led laboratory and group discussion sections in microbiology and genetics. I have delivered lectures to college students, other scientists, and general audiences on basic science research in biology, and my training has included an emphasis on cell biology and genetics research. In the past year, I became a certified high school teacher and completed a one-year internship teaching high school biology and genetics.
My teaching philosophy is to engage students in their education using active learning techniques. I will review or teach the relevant material by using real world examples to help explain difficult concepts, such as explaining how cells adhere, or stick, to one another like a zipper on a jacket. I routinely ask for feedback from students as they learn to make sure they are grasping the concepts that are being taught and I encourage my students to ask questions or stop me when they do not understand a topic.
I truly hope that every student I work with improves both his or her grades and confidence when learning science. I look forward to working with and helping anyone who needs assistance with biology. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My general biology training included numerous courses in plant biology, including plant physiology. The first organism I worked with was an aquatic fern in the laboratory. I am most comfortable teaching the basics of plant evolution, alternation of generation, and plant anatomy.
I have worked with with genetic organisms in the laboratory and I have participated in teaching genetics at the college level.

I have a broad base of knowledge about the animal kingdom, including training in embryology, evolution, classification, and the distribution of animals throughout the Earth.
