All of Chris’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Chris’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 includes a more thorough exploration of functions with an emphasis on quadratics and polynomials. A primary focus is connecting the graphical, table and equation formats of functions to each other and learning about domain and range. Finally you learn about the wide variety of real world situations that can be modeled to predict future outcomes from current data.

Calculus

Calculus is the study of rates of change, and has numerous and varied applications from business, to physics, to medicine. The complexity of the topics involved however, require that your grasp of mathematical concepts and function properties is strong.

I have helped numerous students master both the foundations and the specific skills taught in a variety of calculus courses.

Discrete Math

I took PROMYS (Program in Math for Young Scientists) for teachers at BU several years ago (1992) as part of my master's program, this intense summer course involved studying number theory and discrete math topics full time (40+ hours/week) for a month and a half. I also do extensive work with logic and set theory in my honors geometry classes.

Geometry

Geometry is the study and exploration of logic and visual reasoning. There are numerous tools and facts that you need to understand and then you build on them throughout the year. At the end of this course, a student should be able to make and critique logical arguments and calculate missing parts of a geometric diagram.

Precalculus

Pre-calculus is the study of function families and their behavior. It includes transformations, trig and lots of modeling of real world behavior. When teaching Pre-calculus I focus on helping students to make the connections between the graphical, table and equation forms of the functions we work with.

SAT Math

The SAT is a test that with some simple techniques and practice of specific aspects of high school math content students can improve their scores and their appeal to prospective colleges. I will help students identify and address their mathematical issues on the SAT.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
