I have over 13 years of experience as both a classroom teacher and tutor. I have taught and/or tutored students in grades kindergarten through twelfth. I enjoy teaching and particularly enjoy the one on one time with students that I tutor. My students and I find a way to have an enjoyable time while working together, even when tackling the most tedious of subjects. I find that humor mixed with high expectations, both of my student and myself, creates a delightful atmosphere in which to learn and to teach.
My strengths lie in two opposite age needs. For students in lower grades, I have been very successful in helping students become better decoders in their reading by a very strong emphasis on phonics. This skill also greatly helps their spelling as well. For the upper grades, my passion and strength lies in two areas--teaching students how to analyze works of literature and go deeper with them and writing essays, papers, etc. Most of my students have enjoyed the process of going deeper in works of literature immensely, and I have had students correspond with me even into their college years thanking me for all that I taught them. For me, there is nothing quite like opening up a whole new world to a student via a great work of literature! I have also had tremendous success teaching students--starting at second grade--how to write essays. The skill of being able to write clearly, effectively, and concisely is one that cannot be stressed enough, and my students not only learn the how-to but also gain a confidence in themselves as writers.
I also use my teaching gift at my church where I lead a weekly women's Bible study. I just thoroughly enjoy teaching no matter the age!
