I have been tutoring students since my junior year of college, and knew then that I would spend my life educating students. I bring a calm but challenging energy to my sessions as I seek to bring out the best in each student, which usually brings out the best in me. I've worked with students of all ages--from 4th grade to college seniors--and have a special aptitude with those students who think a little outside the box.

Most recently, I was a teaching assistant (or “Teaching Fellow” as Brandeis refers to us) for three courses over the last two years, where I was in charge of a discussion section, leading fifteen to twenty students in weekly discussions of course material, grading papers and other assignments, as well as arraigning individual meetings with students. Before that I was fortunate to work with the Gateway program, meeting individually with ESL students to help them gain the fluency they would need to succeed in a university.

Before coming to Brandeis I worked in a variety of teaching and tutoring positions, most of which involved working with low-income high school students in Brooklyn, New York. I worked with students from a variety of situations from high school seniors looking writing scholarship essays to sophomores trying to pass the required state-wide exams. It was invigorating and often difficult work, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have worked with students on a variety of grammar and reading comprehension tests, from the SATs to NY state exams and have begun to look into the ACT exams as well. I am confident I will be able to help you improve your score.

American History

I was raised by a high school history teacher; American history has always been a passion of mine. As my research focuses on early 20th Century American literature, I have studied the breadth of American history to make sure I know how to properly contextualize events.

English

I graduated college with Highest Honors in English Literature and Philosophy, and I will be entering into my third year in the English and American literature program at Brandeis University, where I have led multiple discussion sections on various aspects of English literature from Poetry to Novels to Theory.

Literature

I have taught literature as part of my PhD program and am passionate about the subject. I tend to read widely and am always interested in encouraging others to do so. In the past few years, I have led student discussions as a TA at Brandeis University on everything from the history of poetry to Disney films. Before Brandeis, I worked with high school students in NYC to help them prepare for the state literature exam and am able to work with students of all ages and backgrounds.

Proofreading

I have a keen eye for grammar and a dedication to clear, precise prose. I have worked with students applying to college, graduate school, and even for scholarships with great success. In each case I aim to help the student write clearly and powerfully. I want to help them not only learn how to express themselves more fluidly, but how to enjoy it.

Reading

As an English graduate student I have spent years learning how to closely read passages and figuring out how they work. Working with students for test prep I employ a variety of techniques designed to help them quickly and correctly gather the information they need from a passage to ensure proper comprehension.

SAT Reading

I have worked with several students in the past with the SAT Reading and Writing sections, often with great success. Focusing on critical reading and test taking skills, I encourage students to gain the courage and tools they need to succeed. Having taken both the SAT and GRE Reading and Writing exams--and scored in the 99th percentile both times--I am confident I can guide students through the test.

Writing

As an English student, I prize good writing over just about anything. In college I was a writing tutor, and it was my experience there that led me on to pursue a career in education. I enjoy helping students feel comfortable and capable of expressing themselves and ensuring that they develop the tools necessary to continue to do so.
