Greetings, curious students! My name is Walker, and I am an enthusiastic and amicable person with a passion for the acquisition and sharing of knowledge and skills. I have loved learning my entire life, always looking up to all the people who taught and helped me, and I've come to find that teaching and tutoring bring me the same sort of enjoyment into my life.
I graduated with a summa cum laude honors degree from a top liberal arts college, where I learned the importance of working hard and learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While completing two rather different majors and pursuing various extracurricular activities, I interacted and collaborated with many different types of people there, and I really learned just how many different ways there are to understand a concept and arrive at a solution. I know there is no "one size fits all" approach to learning, and I aim to cater to the individual when it comes to tutoring.
I know also that certain concepts can be more challenging for some folk than others, and sometimes it is frustrating to struggle with a challenge at great length. I look forward to finding new approaches to problems and doing my best to find one that is clear and comfortable for the student. In any case, I will help the student with absolute patience. My goal is never to provide a student with a solution; I merely act as a facilitator for a student's own avenues of problem-solving. The mind is a beautiful thing, and whenever I can I will foster the student's own growth.
My primary area of expertise is in science. I have been a professional chemist and researcher since graduating from college, and I spend a significant portion of my spare time reading textbooks on topics like acoustic physics, advanced organic chemistry, and principles of electrodynamics. I really can't get enough science! Likewise, I absolutely love to get students excited about science. When a student has a natural curiosity and excitement, s/he can do amazing things in science. I will work towards getting students enthusiastic about science and giving them the tools they need to approach problems.
Though I have spent several years of my life doing rigorous chemistry research, I also have an extensive background in music and Japanese language and culture. For over 10 years I have performed as a solo and ensemble musician of the piano, the guitar (electric, classical, acoustic), the bass (electric, upright), percussion (drum kit, unpitched orchestral), and voice. I am a composer by trade, but I love theory and history as well! Whether you are a teenage aspiring heavy metal guitarist or a father of three who's always been a little interested in knowing why The Beatles sound so cool, I would love to design a curriculum or practice regiment to help you meet your goals.
Thinking about studying Japanese or moving to Japan? I would love to help! Before I moved to Boston, I lived in Japan, teaching in Japanese at a Japanese university, and I have spent years studying the language.
I will try to be as flexible with my time and as competitive with my rates as possible. I prioritize both the progress and satisfaction of the student, and I will always listen gratefully to feedback. I look forward to hearing from you. Let's learn!
I have completed a summa cum laude degree in music composition from a top liberal arts music program. I have studied with three major composers in the fields of classical, jazz, and contemporary. I have received several awards for my compositions and have a successful career as a composer.
Besides years of home cooking in a variety of styles, I have been employed as a cook for a Japanese restaurant. I would consider myself an expert in Japanese cuisine, and I will be opening my own Japanese restaurant within a month.
As a chemistry major in a top undergraduate science program, I was required to take a number of classes which required frequent understanding and implementation of differential equations. I did very well in those classes, and I attribute some of my success to my ability to understand and solve problems with differential equations.
I have studied drums (pop, rock, jazz, heavy metal) for several years, and I currently play drums in a band in the Boston area. As a composer and musician of a few other instruments, I have a very strong rhythmic background, and I pride myself on my ability to help others with unique rhythmic needs and exercises.
As a music composition graduate, experienced a capella singer, and current singing musician in Boston, I consider myself an expert in ear training and theory. Ear training is an invaluable part of any music theory, performance, or composition education, and I would really enjoy teaching musicians anything to do with ear training, from elementary warm ups to devilishly difficult exercises.
I graduated a top liberal arts institution with a degree in music. I have extensively studied music theory, history, composition, and performance. I have done ethnomusicology research in the field, and I would consider myself perfectly apt to tutor and teach general music concepts.
I have been seriously studying the electric guitar for over ten years. I play at an elite level, and I have no problem playing in a variety of styles, such as jazz, pop, funk, heavy metal, or experimental. I have taught guitar lessons in the past, and I enjoy helping a student progress and find their untapped potential.
I have been an owner of Macintosh computers for over seven years, and as a rather tech-savvy person, I have delved into areas of iOS beyond what I believe any average user has experienced. I am more than comfortable tutoring somebody in the basic use, operation, and maintenance of a computer that is based on any Macintosh platform.
As a college Music major, I spent significant time reviewing music history, from the baroque to the contemporary. I also am very passionate about how music theory and compositional technique has developed over time, so I would really enjoy any music history approach that focuses on theory. I believe I would be a great tutor for anyone looking for a music history overview or hoping to learn about a specific period, instrument, or composer.
As a music major in a serious college program, I spent a lot of time sight singing in an academic setting. Additionally, I was a director of a popular a capella group at my college, and needless to say, I spent hours of my free time sight singing. I might not have the voice of an angel, but I am a very good sight singer, and I have considerable experience teaching singing and reading music to newcomers and skilled musicians alike.
I graduated with a summa cum laude degree from a top liberal arts music program with a specialization in composition, which included song writing. I have written, recorded, and produced over 100 songs on my own and in collaboration with others in a wide variety of genres and instrumentations. I have a passion for songwriting, and I look forward to helping any students with the theory, arrangement, and notation required to improve their songwriting skills.
I have been a competitive swimmer for most of my life. I swam for and was captain of a HS varsity team that was ranked no. 1 in the country. Additionally, I was a recruited varsity athlete for a college team that was consistently in the top 3 of our conference and placed regularly in the top 10 in the nation for NCAA Division III. I've taught innumerable swimming lessons to infants, children, and adults over the last 10 years or so. I have lifeguard experience as well.
I played for one year for my high school varsity water polo team and several years for my college water polo team, traveling and playing in tournaments around New England. I would not consider myself professional level, but I am a strong swimmer and adept tactician. I would be comfortable teaching anybody the basic rules, strokes, and strategies of the game.
