I am a prize-winning writer, experienced professional editor, and passionate teacher. I’m new to WyzAnt, but I have years of experience helping people from many backgrounds improve their writing.
I’ve worked with high school students on creative writing and college essays through organizations like National Geographic and Putney Student Travel. In my other life as a magazine and freelance editor, I’ve worked with a huge range of established and aspiring writers on creative essays, academic articles, book projects, and grant applications. I’ve worked with humanities professors at Harvard and NYU, graduate students at the University of Chicago, clinical psychiatrists—even a real estate investor at Baupost!
You would think that a high school student would have very different challenges as a writer than a Harvard professor. Surprisingly, that’s not true. We all struggle to balance the creative aspect of writing (generating ideas, making associations, sensing significance) with the analytic aspect (identifying an argument, organizing evidence, communicating clearly). By splitting those aspects into two distinct phases, you can learn to be your own editor without suffocating your inner muse.
Working with me will definitely help you produce a strong, polished piece of writing. But more than that, working with me will help you develop a strong writing process, so that the next time you begin a project, you have lots of tools at your disposal to conquer writer’s block and find your winding way forward.
I’ve chosen WyzAnt because it does not lock us into a set curriculum—it encourages intellectual creativity between tutors and students. If you want to find your voice as a writer, let’s talk!
[Beyond writing, I’m available for tutoring in English, History, Social Studies, Psychology, and Religion. With a double major from Yale in Literature and Ethnic Studies, and a Master's degree from the University of Chicago in Creative Writing, I’ve read a lot of books, and I’m always eager to read more.]
