I am an experienced tutor with specialization in English language arts and a strong background in education. I have a bachelors degree in Writing, Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College, and I'm a few short months away from completing my master's program in Education at Lesley University. At this time, I am also certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education to teach English in grades 5-12, and my long-term professional goal is to become a high school English teacher.
For the past school year, I have worked as a permanent substitute teacher at a local high school where I design, implement, facilitate lessons for all content areas and grade levels (9-12). Additionally, for the past two years I have served as a dedicated volunteer tutor at a nonprofit writing and tutoring center called 826 Boston. There, I tutored students ages 6-18 both at the tutoring center as well as in the Boston Public schools; taught and assisted with creative writing workshops, worked one-on-one with students during College Essay Bootcamp; developed curriculum and lessons for Science and Writing summer camp; and reviewed and responded to student writing submissions for publication. I also tutor an adult learner who has dyslexia, and we meet weekly to work on reading fluency and comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing.
I would describe my tutoring style as creative, patient, and flexible. My coursework as graduate student in education has taught me how to address the varied learning needs of all students, including English language learners and students with academic, linguistic, or physical disabilities. Furthermore, my experience as a tutor has shown me the tremendous importance of personalizing instruction to meet students' individual learning needs and interests. I'm a firm believer in getting to know students personally; teaching through the multiple intelligences; incorporating explanations and examples that resonate with students' interests; explicitly teaching reading and word-decoding strategies; using technology and supplementary resources to support diverse learners; motivating students through positive reinforcement and descriptive feedback; and making students feel comfortable enough to learn, ask questions, and set goals.
Thank you for taking the time to review my tutor profile! I look forward to hearing from you, and I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
