As a writing tutor, I have an unusual skill set that allows me to develop unique and diverse admissions essays with my students. I have a B.A. in English with a concentration in African American Literature, so I am familiar with writings from the 16th and 17th centuries to the contemporary. Within African American Literature I focused on the Harlem Renaissance because I was fascinated by the way that people began to write in different forms. It is this type of creativity that I would like to encourage in my students. I wrote my capstone on sonnets; as a hybrid project, it combined my analytical and creative skills. I both wrote and analyzed contemporary and classical sonnets. It is the combination of these creative and analytical skills that make me the perfect tutor for college admissions essays. I am not far removed from the college admissions process myself which gives me a special outlook: I understand the pressure of writing a good admission essay and I have a higher education that allows me to improve my students writing while providing for them a comfortable environment in which to learn.
