Patient, Creative Tutor in Any Genre of Writing

Many students dread writing because they find it tedious or irrelevant to their lives at present; others love to write creatively but find the conventions of academic discourse too constricting. My goal, both as a professor of college writing and as a tutor, is to help students view every assignment as an opportunity to explore the ideas that interest them and to produce pieces of writing that are both relevant and unique. Once they feel empowered by the conventions of genre rather than constrained, they are free to begin exploring the world around them and cultivating a craft that will serve them in any field of study they pursue.

I have been teaching at the college level for over two years now and firmly believe that those who invest themselves in the creative act of writing demonstrate a higher level of intellectual engagement with the topics at hand. Therefore, I strive to equip students with basic composition techniques that can be applied to a variety of genres and to support the development of writing projects that are both critically sound and creative in nature. Once a student begins writing from a place of personal interest, even research papers become truly inspired pieces of writing and sources of pride.

I have an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, where I also teach Introduction to College Writing and Research Writing, and have worked in the publishing industry as a proofreader and associate editor. My experiences writing for both the page and the stage have taught me to be patient and disciplined in my own writing practices, and my tutoring style mirrors those habits. My classrooms are laid back yet efficient, and I enjoy collaborating with others to enable work that represents their unique perspective and authorial voice. SAT Reading

Reading comprehension skills pose problems for many students who perceive the words on the page as a static image. There are some basic tactics that can help students extract the issues that are implicated by a text, but employing those techniques within in a time limit can be overwhelming. The process of preparing for the test involves practicing those tactics regularly while slowly introducing the pressures imposed by a time limit.

SAT Writing

Like all other forms of writing, the SAT writing exam comes with its own specific standards and conventions. Understanding those conventions is the first step towards doing well on the test, but learning when and how to adapt those guidelines is the key to doing well on any writing assignment, regardless of the specifics of class and assignment. The SAT, then, is the beginning, not the endgame.

I received my BFA in Theatre Studies from Southern Methodist University in 2001 and have been a company member with The House Theatre of Chicago since 2002. My training encompasses all aspects of rehearsing, producing, and performing for the stage, though most of my professional experiences have involved playwriting and acting. Producing original works is the sole focus of my theatre company's endeavors, so I place a lot of emphasis of collaboration and the revision process.
